Shorewomen Down Garnet, 5-4, to Improve to 9-0

Bercovici Clinches Match with Win at No. 1 Singles

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College improved to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in Centennial Conference play with a 5-4 win over visiting Swarthmore this afternoon inside the Johnson Fitness Center. The Shorewomen came into the match ranked 14th in the Atlantic South region while the Garnet (3-7, 2-2 Centennial) were ranked 10th in the region.

The Shorewomen won two of the three doubles contests to take a 2-1 lead. Juniors Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep [MD]), the region's seventh-ranked doubles team, bested Emily Rosenblum and Rosie DuBrin, the region's 12th-ranked tandem, 8-5, at No. 1. Freshman Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, NJ/Bergen Tech) and sophomore Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) added an 8-6 win over Kelsey Johnson and Luann Cignavitch at No. 2. Swarthmore won at No. 3 as Stephanie Chia and Katie Samuelson edged sophomore Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and freshman  Bethany Daller (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan), 9-8(2). 

Finnegan led off singles play with a 6-1, 6-0, win over DuBrin at No. 3. Swarthmore cut the lead to 3-2 when Johnson completed a 6-2, 6-2, win over McNicol at No. 4, but Marshall, the region's 15th-ranked singles player, finished off a 6-4, 6-1, victory over Rosenblum at No. 2 moments later to give Washington a 4-2 lead. Bercovici clinched the victory for the Shorewomen by finishing a 6-1, 6-3, victory over Lia Carlson, the region's 24th-ranked singles player, at No. 1. Swarthmore picked up its third point at No. 5 where Samuelson downed Cohen, 8-3, and its fourth point when Chia completed an 8-5 win over Daller at No. 6.

The Shorewomen, who extended their program-best start with today's win, return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Muhlenberg.
