Washington Sweeps Doubles in Victory
HAVERFORD, PA -- The Washington College women's tennis team improved to 12-1 overall and 7-1 in Centennial Conference play with a 6-3 win over host Haverford this afternoon. The Shorewomen entered the match ranked 14th in the Atlantic South region. The Fords fell to 12-3 and 5-3 with the loss.
Washington swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead in the match. Juniors Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep [MD]), the region's seventh-ranked doubles team, downed Katie Wettick and Alex Ferrara, he region's 15th-ranked tandem, 9-8, at No. 1. Freshman Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, NJ/Bergen Tech) and sophomore Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) were 8-3 winners over Katie Drooyan and Kate Donches at No. 2, while sophomore Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and freshman Bethany Daller (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) posted an 8-3 victory against Helen Fisun and Rachal Torg at No. 3.
Haverford won at the top two singles spots as Wettick bested Bercovici, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 and Ferrara downed Finnegan, 6-4, 7-6(2) at No. 2, but wins by Marshall, the region's 15th-ranked singles player, over Fisun, 6-1, 6-3, and McNicol over Drooyan, 6-2, 4-6, 11-9, at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, ensured the victory for Washington. Donches gave the Fords their third point with an 8-2 victory over Cohen at No. 5, while Daller scored the Shorewomen's sixth point with an 8-6 triumph against Jordana Bloom at No. 6
The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with a non-conference match at nationally-ranked Mary Washington.
