Shorewomen Take Two of Three Doubles Matches in Loss
FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- Host Mary Washington, the 23rd-ranked team in Division III and sixth-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, topped visiting Washington College, the region's ninth-ranked team, 6-3, in a non-conference women's tennis match today in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles improved to 13-7 with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 12-2 with the loss.
Washington built a 2-1 lead in the match through doubles play as juniors Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep [MD]), the region's seventh-ranked doubles team, beat Courtney Goimarac and Megan Lawlor, the region's ninth-ranked tandem, 8-5, at No. 1 and sophomore Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and freshman Bethany Daller (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) bested Jocelyn Lewis and Cassie Bowman, 8-3, at No. 3. The Eagles won at No. 2 where Michelle Meadows and Lindsay Raulston downed freshman Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, NJ/Bergen Tech) and sophomore Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School), 8-3.
Mary Washington won five of the six singles matches. Goimarac, ranked 13th in the region in singles, beat Finnegan, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1. Bercovici, ranked 17th in the region, picked up Washington's singles win at No. 2, downing Lawlor, the region's 16th-ranked player, 6-2, 6-4. Raulston bested Marshall, the region's 22nd-ranked player, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3. Meadows topped McNicol, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4, Casey Malcom defeated Cohen, 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-4, at No. 5, and Bowman beat Daller, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 to round out singles.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a Centennial Conference match at Gettysburg.
