Washington Breezes Past Gettysburg, 9-0
GETTYSBURG, PA -- Visiting Washington College clinched the second seed in the upcoming five-team Centennial Conference Tournament with a 9-0 women's tennis win over host Gettysburg this afternoon. The Shorewomen, who are ranked ninth in the Atlantic South region, improved to 13-2 overall and 8-1 in conference matches with the win. The Bullets fell to 8-5 and 4-4.
Juniors Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep [MD]), the region's seventh-ranked team, were 8-2 winners over Katie Taylor and Bev Keyes at No. 1 doubles. Freshman Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, NJ/Bergen Tech) and sophomore Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) posted an 8-6 win over Laura Habecker and Meghan Fornshell at No. 2, while sophomore Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and freshman Bethany Daller (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) topped Kylle O'Sullivan and Kelsey Boyce, 8-4, at No. 3.
In singles, Finnegan defeated Taylor, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1, Marshall (the region's 22nd-ranked player) beat O'Sullivan, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2, and Bercovici (ranked 17th in the region) bested Habecker, 6-1, 6-0, as the Shorewomen had little trouble in the top half of the line-up. McNicol added a 6-2, 5-7, 10-3, win over Meg Kelly at No. 4, while Cohen beat Keyes, 9-7, at No. 5. Daller blanked Boyce, 8-0, at No. 6 to round out singles.
Johns Hopkins has already clinched the top seed for the conference tournament. The Blue Jays' men's team is also in first place and is a win away from clinching the top seed on the men's side as well. If Hopkins is the number one seed for both tournaments, the Shorewomen will host their own semifinal match on April 30th. Otherwise, Hopkins will be the host for both semifinal matches.
The Shorewomen return to action Thursday with a pair of home matches - a Centennial Conference match against McDaniel and a non-conference match against Trinity (DC).
