Daller Seals Win with Victory at No. 6 Singles
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College, the ninth-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, defeated visiting Swarthmore, ranked 11th in the region, 5-1, in a Centennial Conference Tournament semifinal match this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The Shorewomen (16-3) advance to tomorrow's championship match at Johns Hopkins against the winner of today's Johns Hopkins versus Muhlenberg semifinal match. The Garnet finish their season at 9-9.
The Shorewomen took a 1-0 lead as juniors Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep [MD]), the region's seventh-ranked doubles team, blanked Emily Rosenblum and Rosie DuBrin, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles. Washington increased its lead to 2-0 as freshman Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, NJ/Bergen Tech) and sophomore Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) completed an 8-4 win over Lia Carlson and Katie Samuelson at No. 2, but the Garnet got on the board with a win at No. 3 as Luann Cignavitch and Kelsey Johnson topped sophomore Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and freshman Bethany Daller (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan), 8-5.
The Shorewomen ran their lead to 4-1 by winning the first two singles matches to finish in straight sets as Finnegan rolled past DuBrin, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 and Marshall, ranked 22nd in the region in singles, beat Rosenblum, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2. Daller finished off the victory for the Shorewomen with a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, win at No. 6 over Aliya Padamsee. Fourth and sixth singles were in the third set at the time the match finished, while first singles was in the second set.
With the win, Washington head coach Dave Marshall picked up his 55th victory as head coach of the Shorewomen, tying him with Matt Rose for the most in program history. Coach Marshall is 55-19 in four seasons at the helm of the Shorewomen.
Tomorrow's Centennial Conference Championship match begins at 3:00 p.m.
