Papen Breezes to 6-0, 6-0, Win at No. 1 Singles
WESTMINSTER, MD -- The Washington College men's tennis team blanked host McDaniel, 9-0, as the Shoremen won the Centennial Conference opener for both teams this afternoon in Westminster, MD. Senior Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) had a big day for the Shoremen (3-2) overall, winning, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles and teaming with classmate Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) to record an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles.
Papen and Ellison blanked Steve French and Chad Palman at the top doubles spot. Sophomore Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and freshman Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) played the closest doubles match of the afternoon, beating Brian Kron and Matthews Langsdale, 8-4. Freshman Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and graduate student Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) were 8-2 winners over Daniel Xinis and Seth McFall at No. 3.
In singles, Papen shut out French at No. 1, Rajes downed Kron, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2, and Boaté topped McFall, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3. Washington dropped a total of just four games in the last three singles spots as Cywinski defeated Palman, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4, Ellison bested Langsdale, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5, and senior Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) downed Xinis, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6.
The Shoremen, ranked 13th in the Atlantic South region, return to action Friday with their home opener, a 2:00 p.m. match against Bates.
