CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Haverford College topped host Washington College, 6-3, in a Centennial Conference women's tennis match this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center.
The Fords (10-7, 6-2 Centennial) took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Rachal Torg and Kristen Andesen were 8-4 winners over senior Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) and junior Kelsey Mills (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge-South Dorchester) at No. 3, while Alex Ferrara and Caitlin Gallagher defeated seniors Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Gabie Batista (Sykesville, MD/Century) by an identical score at No. 1. The Shorewomen (9-4, 5-3) got on the board when juniors Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) completed a 9-8(5) win over Kate Donches and Abbey Flynn at No. 2.
The Fords extended their lead to 4-1 with Gallagher's 6-1, 6-1, win over McNicol at No. 2 singles and Andesen's 6-0, 6-0, victory against Mills at No. 6. Haverford clinched the match when Jordana Bloom completed her 6-1, 6-3, win over Batista at No. 4. The Fords got their sixth point shortly thereafter on a 6-1, 6-2, victory by Flynn over sophomore Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford) at No. 5. The Shorewomen won the final two singles matches to finish as Finnegan bested Ferrara, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 and Cohen defeated Donches, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6, at No. 1.
The Shorewomen return to action Friday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Muhlenberg.
