ALLENTOWN, PA -- Host Muhlenberg College won two of the three doubles matches and won at the bottom three spots in singles to record a 5-4 Centennial Conference women's tennis victory over visiting Washington College this afternoon in Allentown, PA. The Mules improved to 4-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 9-5 and 5-4 with the loss.
Nina Sanders and Emily Szulman won the most competitive doubles match of the day, defeating Washington seniors Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Gabie Batista (Sykesville, MD/Century), 8-6, at No. 1. The Mules got an 8-0 victory at No. 3 where Sharen Resnikoff and Amanda von Taube blanked sophomore Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford) and senior Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford) at No. 3. Washington won at No. 3 as juniors Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) were 8-1 victors over Jennifer Goldberg and Gabriela Contino.
The Shorewomen won the top two singles matches in straight sets as Finnegan beat Sanders, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 and McNicol bested Szulman, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 2. Cohen outlasted Goldberg at No. 3, 6-3, 1-6, 12-10, but the Mules' strength in the bottom of the line-up was too much for Washington to overcome. Resnikoff beat Batista, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4, Contino beat Stevens, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5, and von Taube defeated junior Kelsey Mills (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge-South Dorchester), 6-0, 6-3, at No. 6.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Gettysburg.
