Shorewomen's Conference Tournament Fate Still Undecided
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's tennis team put the wraps on its regular-season Centennial Conference schedule with a 5-4 win over visiting Gettysburg College this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center.
The Shorewomen, who are ranked eighth in the Atlantic South region and improved to 10-5 overall and finished their conference schedule at 6-4, will now await the results of other conference matches to determine whether or not they will receive one of the five berths to the Centennial Conference Tournament. The final conference matches that could effect the Shorewomen's fate will not take place until a week from today.
In today's match, the Shorewomen took a 2-1 lead through doubles play as seniors Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Gabie Batista (Sykesville, MD/Century) were 8-4 winners over Isabelle Rodriguez and Kyle O'Sullivan at No. 1 and juniors Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) won by an identical score at No. 2. Gettysburg won at No. 3 where Meg Kelly and Kelsey Boyce defeated senior Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford) and junior Kelsey Mills (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge-South Dorchester), 8-0.
Washington won at the top three spots in singles to win the match. Finnegan, the region's sixth-ranked singles player, bested Rodriguez, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1, McNicol downed O'Sullivan, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 2, and Cohen was a 6-1, 6-4, victor over Kelly at No. 3. Gettysburg won at the the bottom three spots as Habecker beat Batista, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 4, Charrisha Watkins topped sophomore Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford), 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5, and Boyce beat Mills, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6.
The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with a 10:00 a.m. non-conference match at Mary Washington.
