FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- Host Mary Washington, ranked 24th in Division III and sixth in the Atlantic South region, defeated visiting Washington College, the region's eighth-ranked team, 7-2, in a non-conference women's tennis match today.
The Eagles (11-5) won at the bottom two spots in doubles by identical 8-3 counts as Cassie Bowman and Anna Richman beat juniors Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) at No. 2 and Maddy Martin and Michaela Dowd bested sophomore Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford) and senior Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford) at No. 3. The Shorewomen (10-6) picked up a win at No. 1 doubles where seniors Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Gabie Batista (Sykesville, MD/Century) topped Casey Malcolm and Lindsay Raulston, 9-7.
In singles, Raulston, ranked fifth in the region in singles, beat Finnegan, ranked sixth in the region, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1. Bowman downed McNicol, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2, while Alex Ritter defeated Cohen, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3. Batista picked up Washington's second point at No. 4, beating Jocelyn Lewis, 4-1, retired. Malcom defeated Stevens, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 and Richman topped junior Kelsey Mills (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge-South Dorchester), 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 to round out singles.
The Shorewomen return to action Thursday with a 3:00 p.m. non-conference home match against Salisbury.
