Cohen Clinches Match with Win at No. 3 Singles
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's tennis team improved to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in Centennial Conference play with a 5-4 win over visiting Bryn Mawr this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center.
Washington won two of the three doubles matches. Seniors Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Gabbie Batista (Sykesville, MD/Century) were 8-3 winners over Anna Perocchi and Vivian Chen at No. 1, while juniors Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) defeated Eliza Perocchi and Jenny Vogel, 8-4, at No. 2. Bryn Mawr picked up a point at No. 3 as Rachel Genovese and Melani Shafer blanked senior Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) and sophomore Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford), 8-0.
The Shorewomen took the top three singles spots to win the match. Finnegan downed Anna Perocchi, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1, McNicol rolled past Chen, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2, and Cohen pulled out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, victory over Eliza Perocchi at No. 3. Cohen's win clinched the victory for Washington. Bryn Mawr posted three wins at the bottom of the singles line-up. Vogel beat Batista, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 4, Shafer shut out Stevens, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5, and Zoe Odenwalder bested Tait, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6.
Batista and Tait joined the Shorewomen late last week. Today's match marked Batista's first collegiate match since the end of her freshman season and Tait's first-ever collegiate match.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Johns Hopkins.
