Weaver & Kang Win in Singles and Doubles
CARLISLE, PA -- Host Dickinson College topped visiting Washington College, 5-4, in the Centennial Conference women's tennis opener for both schools this afternoon in Carlisle, PA. The Red Devils improved to 2-6 overall with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 1-3 with the loss.
Dickinson won the first two doubles matches to finish as Sarah Cantor and Sydney Diamond beat freshman Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) and junior Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford), 8-3, at No. 3 and Alysia Rodgers and Shannon Lavery bested seniors Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School), 8-4, at No. 1. Washington got on the board at No. 2, where freshmen Gyeyeon Kang (Seoung Nam Si, South Korea/Westhill [CT]) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg) were 8-4 winners over Dominique Hedderich and Madeline Altholtz.
The Red Devils extended their lead to 4-1 by winning the first two singles matches to finish, getting identical 6-2, 6-2, wins by Lavery and Diamond over McNicol and Cohen at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Kang then won, 6-2, 6-3, over Atholtz at No. 4 for the Shorewomen, but Hedderich clinched the win for Dickinson by completing a 6-1, 6-0, victory over Stevens at No. 6. McIntyre picked up the Shorewomen's third point with a 6-4, 6-0, win over Cantor at No. 5 and Weaver outlasted Rodgers for a 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-2, win at No. 1 to provide the final margin.
The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Ursinus.
