Box Score Slavin Scores Career-Best Three Goals For
Washington
BRYN MAWR, PA – Visiting #18 Washington College recorded
its first shutout in a decade in a 23-0 win over host Bryn Mawr on
Wednesday afternoon in Centennial Conference women's lacrosse
action at Applebee Field. The Shorewomen improve to 10-1
overall and 3-1 in the conference, while the Owls drop to 2-9 and
0-6 respectively.
The blanking is the Shorewomen's third all-time in program
history. Washington's two prior whitewashings both came in
the 2003 season as they shut out Bryn Mawr, on March 29, and
Dickinson, on April 19, both by the score of 17-0.
With the win Washington has now won 10 or more games three years
in a row for the first time. The Shorewomen won 11 games in
2011 and recorded 10 victories in 2012. The only other time
the Shorewomen have had consecutive double-digit win seasons were
in 1999 (12) and 2000 (14).
The visitors scored three times in the first 85 seconds to take
a 3-0 lead. Senior attacker Corinne
Ziccardi (Baltimore, MD/Loch Raven) scored the first
goal of the contest just 17 seconds into the game to put the
Shorewomen ahead for good. Sophomore midfielder Emily
Hubley (West Chester, PA/Bayard Rustin) made it 2-0
just 19 ticks later with senior Mollie
Shipley (Denville, NJ/Morris Catholic) chalking up the
first of her game-high seven assists, which also tied her
personal-best. Ziccardi made it 3-0 on an unassisted
score. The Shorewomen built their lead to 11-0 just 9:13 into
the game on a goal by sophomore Liz Godorov
(Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East). Washington took
a 16-0 into halftime and scored seven times in the second half to
provide the final margin.
In addition to her contest-best seven helpers, Shipley also tied
her career-high with eight points and that led all players.
Senior Marissa
Restaino (Media, PA/Penncrest) and Ziccardi each had
four points on three goals and one assist. For Restaino, it
was the second straight game she had four points, which is her
career-high. Junior attacker Sydney
Slavin (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) had career-bests of
three goals and three points. Hubley, junior
defender/midfielder Kathleen
Maleski (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll), junior attacker
Laura Nicely
(Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) and sophomore
attacker Catherine
Stanley (Freeland, MD/Hereford) all had two scores in
the victory. Freshman attacker Carley
Kendall (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) won a
career-best five draw controls, while freshman attacker/midfielder
Erica
Hoffman (Laurel Springs, NJ/Sterling) had
personal-highs of four ground balls, which also tied for game-high,
and two caused turnovers.
The Shorewomen have scored 20 or more goals in consecutive games
for the second time in program history. The only other time
Washington did that was in 2008 on March 30 in a 21-4 victory over
Wesley and on April 2 in a 20-10 triumph over Haverford. The
45 goals in the last two games are the most for the team in
back-to-back contests in the 32 seasons of Shorewomen
Lacrosse. The 23-goal margin of victory is the largest
victory margin in the team's history.
The Shorewomen outshot the Owls, 28-2, and won 19 of the game's
25 draw controls. WC was 8-for-10 in clears, while Bryn Mawr
was 4-for-10.
The Shorewomen return to action on Saturday afternoon at 4:00
p.m. versus visiting Dickinson in Centennial Conference action.
