CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Johns Hopkins University, ranked sixth in Division III and second in the Atlantic South region, improved to 11-2 overall and remained unbeaten in Centennial Conference play with a 9-0 women's tennis victory over homestanding Washington College this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The Shorewomen fell to 4-7 and 3-4 with the loss.
The most competitive doubles match came at No. 3 where Shannon Libaw and Kara McDonough were 8-4 winners over senior Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and junior Amy Stevens (Street, MD/North Harford). Stephanie Rettig and Kaitlin Pfisterer beat senior Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) and freshman Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom), 8-2, at No. 1, while Lauren Fields and Olivia Kasten topped freshmen Gyeyeon Kang (Seoung Nam Si, South Korea/Westhill [CT]) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, OH/Perrysburg), 8-1, at No. 2.
In singles, Kang won the second set off of Fields at No. 4 before ultimately falling, 6-4, 5-7, 10-7. The Blue Jays won the other five singles matches in straight sets. Rettig topped Weaver, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1, Libaw beat McNicol, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2, Pfisterer downed Cohen, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3, Kasten topped McIntyre, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5, and McDonough got the better of Stevens, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6.
The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with an 11:00 a.m. non-conference match at 27th-ranked Mary Washington.
