Shorewomen Take Care of Business To Earn Four Seed In Conference Tournament

Will Host Fifth Seed McDaniel on Wednesday

WESTMINSTER, MD – Visiting Washington College broke open a 5-4 halftime lead with the first seven goals of the second half en route to a 13-6 victory over host McDaniel on Saturday afternoon at Gill Stadium in Centennial Conference women's lacrosse action.  The Shorewomen improve to 12-4 overall and 5-4 in the conference, while the Green Terror drop to 9-7 and 5-4 respectively.

Washington with the victory earned the four seed in the 2013 Centennial Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament and will host McDaniel, the five seed, on Wednesday night in the first round of the tournament and gametime is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.  The Shorewomen earned the right to host with the victory this afternoon.  The two teams will be meeting the conference tournament for the first time.  The winner of this game will travel to top seed Gettysburg on Saturday, May 4 in the semifinal round of the conference tournament.  The other semifinal for next Saturday is set and that will be #3 Haverford versus #2 Franklin & Marshall at Gettysburg.

Leading 5-4 at halftime, the Shorewomen scored the first seven goals of the second half to break open the game.  Washington scored the opening goal of the second half with 24:06 remaining in the contest when sophomore attacker Liz Godorov (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) scored to give the Shorewomen a 6-4 lead.  Emily Hubley (West Chester, PA/Bayard Rustin) cashed in on a free position shot to put Washington up 7-4 with 22:41 remaining.  The Shorewomen pushed their lead to four goals, 8-4, with 20:42 left on a Corinne Ziccardi (Baltimore, MD/Loch Raven) free position score.  Senior midfielder Mollie Shipley (Denville, NJ/Morris Catholic) extended the lead to 9-4 on an unassisted goal with 18:52 left in the contest.  Shipley found Hubley for the next goal to put the Shorewomen up by a 10-4 score with 14:14 remaining in the game.  Eisenbrandt scored with 10:04 left and Hubley tallied with 7:11 to go on unassisted goals respectively to cap the seven-goal run to open the second half and capped an 8-0 run which spanned both halves.  McDaniel's Danielle Entrot ended the run with a free position goal with 6:04 left in the game to cut the lead to 12-5.  Ziccardi made it 13-5 with 1:43 to go on a man-up score and Paige Messersmith closed out the scoring 39 seconds later to trim the lead to 13-6 and the final margin.

In the first half, Anna Mohlenrich scored the game's first goal 9:06 into the game with Entrot getting the assist to put McDaniel ahead 1-0.  The Shorewomen tied it with 19:44 left in the first half on a goal by Ziccardi, but just 27 seconds later Entrot put the Green Terror up by a 2-1 count with Messersmith getting the helper.  The Shorewomen tied the game again at 2-2 with 16:29 remaining in the first half on a goal by senior midfielder Marissa Restaino (Media, PA/Penncrest)Bridget Bopst put McDaniel back in the lead on a tally with 12:00 left in the first at 3-2.  The Shorewomen knotted the score at 3-3 with 9:23 remaining on a goal by junior attacker Carly Eisenbrandt (Baltimore, MD/Towson).  50 seconds later, Restaino scored her second goal of the game with sophomore Emily Hubley (West Chester, PA/Bayard Rustin) notching the assist to give WC its first lead of the game at 4-3.  Anna Beaudry tied the game at 4-4 with 2:50 left on an unassisted goal for McDaniel.  Ziccardi put the Shorewomen back up front for good at 5-4 with 95 seconds left in the first half and that would the score at halftime. 

Hubley and Ziccardi each had four points to tie for game-high, with Ziccardi pumping in a game-best four goals, while Hubley had three goals and an assist along with winning a game-high five draw controls.  With her four points today, Ziccardi moves to sixth place all-time on the Washington career points list with 184.  Eisenbrandt and Restaino had two goals for two points, while Shipley had two points on a goal and a helper.  In goal, senior goalkeeper Stephanie Seibert (Clear Spring, MD/Mercersburg Academy (PA) stopped eight shots.

For McDaniel, Entrot tied Hubley and Ziccardi for game-high in points with four as she had two goals and a pair of assists.  Messersmith won three draw controls to lead the Green Terror.  In net, Kate Goldstein made six saves.

The Shorewomen held a 28-24 edge in shots and cleared the ball successfully 17-of-18 times, while the Green Terror cleared the ball on 13-of-16 occasions.  McDaniel held a slim 11-10 edge in draw controls and 13-12 in ground balls.  WC had 10 turnovers, while McDaniel had 12.  Washington was 2-for-4 on free position chances, while McDaniel was 1-for-4.

Washington is in the tournament for third straight season and the sixth time overall.  Prior to the current three-year run, the Shorewomen made the tournament in 2001, 2002 and 2003, the first three years of the conference tournament.
