Box Score Wild, Wilfong Score in Loss for Washington
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Visiting Catholic University took its only lead of the game in the 88th minute, but that was enough for a 3-2 non-conference men's soccer win over host Washington College tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Cardinals improved to 5-3-1 with the win, while the Shoremen slipped to 5-3 with the loss.
The Shoremen broke a scoreless tie at exactly the 44 minute mark when senior midfielder Sam Wild (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) blasted in a ball that caromed off a Catholic defender. Washington held a 7-2 advantage in shots in the first half.
The Cardinals evened the score at 57:14 on a goal from 30 yards out by Alex Laprade. Washington regained the lead at 73:17 when freshman midfielder Drew Thompson (Dumfries, Va./Woodbridge) scored from 18 yards out after receiving a cross from junior midfielder Matt Wilfong (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll). Catholic again knotted the score at 2-2 on a header in the box by Ben Fleri off an assist from Kevin Romano at 80:46. The Cardinals got the game-winner at 87:45 when Ethan DaPonte headed in a free kick from Ian Smith.
The Shoremen finished with a 16-14 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Cam McGrory made eight saves in the win for Cardinals, while sophomore goalkeeper David Myers (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) made seven saves in the loss for the Shoremen.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at McDaniel.
