Box Score Wilfong Scores in Loss for Shoremen
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Jamie Harper scored the game-winning goal just over five minutes into overtime as the visiting Ursinus College men's soccer team defeated host Washington College, 2-1, in a Centennial Conference game this afternoon.
The Shoremen (4-8-1, 0-5-1 Centennial) got on the board at 20:44 when sophomore forward Brian Wilkinson (Sykesville, Md./Mount St. Joseph) sent a well-placed cross to senior midfielder Matt Wilfong (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) who fired in the goal to give Washington the lead.
Ursinus (5-6-2. 2-3-1) evened the score on a penalty kick by Ryan Butler at 66:35. Each team had chances during the remainder of regulation, but could not pull ahead.
Wyatt Powell had a shot on goal for the Bears 19 seconds into overtime that was stopped by Washington sophomore goalkeeper Jon Wendeborn (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon) and Wilfong had a shot saved by Brian Gately at 91:49. Harper's game-winner came off a failed attempt to clear the ball by the Shoremen. After a short move down the near side of the field, Harper sent the ball into the lower opposite corner for the win at the 95:04 mark.
Gately made six saves in the win for the Bears, who held a slim 14-13 edge in shots in the game. Senior goalkeeper Lin Robinson (York, Pa./York Country Day) played the first half in goal for the Shoremen and made two saves. Wendeborn played the second half and overtime and made three saves.
The Shoremen return to action Thursday with a 4:00 p.m. non-conference home game against Immaculata.
