First Back-to-Back Wins Over Blue Jays in 37 years

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Senior forward Joseph Fili (Sparks, Md./Loyola Blakefield) scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute to give visiting Washington College a 2-1 Centennial Conference men's soccer win over host Johns Hopkins in the season finale for both teams today at Homewood Field. The win gave the Shoremen (7-9-1, 2-6-1 Centennial), who beat the Blue Jays (9-6-2, 3-5-1) by the same score last season, back-to-back wins in the all-time series for the first time since the late 1970s.

The Blue Jays scored on the game's very first shot as Michael Swiercz headed in a goal into the bottom right corner off an assist from Ian Heinrich at 2:40. Neither team generated much offense the rest of the half as the Blue Jays got off just three more shots in the first half, while the Shoremen had one, which went wide off the foot of sophomore forward Brian Wilkinson (Sykesville, Md./Mount St. Joseph).

The Shoremen tied the score with their first shot on goal of the game - a penalty kick by sophomore midfielder Drew Thompson (Dumfries, Va./Woodbridge) at 62:11. Fili's game-winner, the Shoremen's second shot on goal of the game, came at the 80:41 mark when he dribbled past two defenders and shot into the bottom right of the goal from the top of the box. Neither team recorded a shot following Fili's goal.

Senior goalkeeper Lin Robinson (York, Pa./York Country Day) tallied four saves for the Shoremen in his final collegiate game. Hopkins held a 9-5 edge in total shots in the game and recorded seven of the game's nine corner kicks. 

Washington's last back-to-back wins over Johns Hopkins were a 3-2 win in 1976 and a 1-0 victory the following year.
