Shoremen Win Bottom Four Singles Spots in Straight Sets
WESTMINSTER, Md. -- Visiting Washington College swept host McDaniel College, 9-0, in the Centennial Conference men's tennis opener for both schools today in Westminster, Md. The Shoremen improved to 3-3 overall with the win, while the Green Terror fell to 3-2 with the loss.
In doubles, junior Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) and senior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [Fla.]) were 8-2 winners over Brian Kron and Matthew Langsdale at No. 1, while senior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) and freshman Zachary Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) won by the same score over Philip Jorgensen and Daniel Xinis at No. 3. At No. 2, junior Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, Md./Perry Hall) and freshman Jeremy Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) topped Seth McFall and Satchel McCarthy, 8-5.
Washington won at the bottom four spots in singles in straight sets. Holtschneider beat McCarthy, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 3, Joel Novick downed Jorgensen, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4, Jeremy Novick bested Xinis, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5, and Zachary Novick triumphed over Langsdale, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6. At No. 1, Rajes outlasted Kron, 7-5, 1-6, 10-6, while Cywinski got the better of McFall, 3-6, 7-5, 10-5, at No. 2.
The Shoremen return to action tomorrow with an 11:00 a.m. non-conference home match against York.
