Rajes Picks Up Second Straight Win at No. 1 Singles
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Washington College men's tennis team moved back above the .500 mark with a 9-0 non-conference win over visiting York (Pa.) College today at Schottland Tennis Center. The Shoremen improved to 4-3 with the win, while the Spartans slipped to 3-3 with the loss.
The Shoremen rolled to three wins in doubles play to take a 3-0 lead. Junior Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) and senior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [Fla.]) beat Tyler Cheatham and Daniel Erk, 8-1, at No. 1 before junior Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, Md./Perry Hall) and freshman Jeremy Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) topped Zach Hanson and Rory Handlin by the same score at No. 2. Senior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) and freshman Zachary Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 victory against Nathaniel Hoskins and Kaltin Bullaj at No. 3.
The Shoremen picked up their fourth point when Holtschneider finished off Erk, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 3 singles. Joel Novick clinched the victory for Washington with his 6-4, 6-3, defeat of Bullaj at No. 4. Cywinski added the Shoremen's sixth point with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, victory over Hoskins at No. 2, and Rajes followed with a 6-2, 7-6(5), win against Matt Rosenkrantz at No. 1. Jeremy Novick added a 6-0, 6-0, win against Hanson at No. 5 and Zachary Novick wrapped the day up with a 6-2, 6-1, victory over Handlin at No. 6.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Franklin & Marshall.
