Weaver Posts Second Straight 6-0, 6-0, Win at No. 1 Singles
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- Host Ursinus College controlled the lower portion of the line-up en route to a 6-3 win over visiting Washington College in Centennial Conference women's tennis action this afternoon in Collegeville, Pa. The Bears improved to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 3-3 and 0-2 with the loss.
Ursinus took a 2-1 lead through doubles play. Sophomore April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and sophomore Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) picked up a point for the Shorewomen at No. 1 doubles with an 8-0 win over Heather McMasters and Christina Cromwell, but the Bears won at the bottom two spots. S.J. Seabra and BreAnna Bashaw beat sophomore Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) and junior Emily Evans (West Chester, Pa./Henderson), 8-2, at No. 2, while Audrey Whitebloom and Christine Palazzolo bested senior Amy Stevens (Street, Md./North Harford) and freshman Tricia Valerio (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South), 8-3, at No. 3.
In singles play, Weaver rolled to a 6-0, 6-0, win over McMasters at No. 1, while McIntyre beat Whitebloom, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2 to give Washington a 3-2 lead. Ursinus won at the final four singles spots, however to pick up the win. Bashaw beat Kang, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3, Seabra bested Evans, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 4, Cromwell topped Stevens, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5, and Robin Alsher beat Valerio, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 6.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Franklin & Marshall.
