BALTIMORE, Md. -- Host Johns Hopkins University, ranked second in the Atlantic South region and third in all of Division III, blanked visiting Washington College, 9-0, in a Centennial Conference women's tennis match this afternoon in Baltimore.
The Blue Jays (13-1, 5-0 Centennial) did not drop a game at the bottom two doubles spots as Kaitlin Pfisterer and Macie Wilkins blanked senior Amy Stevens (Street, Md./North Harford) and junior Emily Evans (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) at No. 2 and Anna Kankanala and Amanda Soo Ping Chow did the same to sophomore Monica Benitez (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) and freshman Tricia Valerio (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) at No. 3. At No. 1 singles, Olivia Kasten and Ashnaa Rao were 8-5 winners over the region's 13th-ranked doubles team, Washington sophomores April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom).
The most competitive singles match was also at No. 1 as Rao, ranked 18th in the region, pulled out a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8, win over Weaver, ranked 10th in the region. Jody Law was a 6-1, 6-1, winner over McIntyre at No. 2, while Wilkins beat Valerio, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5. The other three singles spots were identical 6-0, 6-0, wins by Hopkins. Mikey Barthelmass beat Evans at No. 3, Kankanala blanked Stevens at No. 4, and Soo Ping Chow shut out Benitez at No. 6.
The Shorewomen (3-8, 0-7) return to action tomorrow with a 2:00 p.m. non-conference match at 21st-ranked Mary Washington.
