Weaver Wins at No. 1 Singles

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Visiting Salisbury University, the 12th-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, defeated host Washington College, 8-1, in a non-conference women's tennis match today at Schottland Tennis Center. The Sea Gulls improved to 10-7 with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 3-10 with the loss.

Salisbury jumped out to a 2-0 lead with an 8-1 win by Sam Babo and Claudia Lohn over sophomore Monica Benitez (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) and freshman Tricia Valerio (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) at No. 3 doubles and an 8-0 victory by Katie Youlios and Allison Lutz over senior Amy Stevens (Street, Md./North Harford) and junior Emily Evans (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) at No. 2. Salisbury made it a clean sweep of doubles when Natalie Savage and Roxanne Alban beat sophomore April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and sophomore Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom), the region's 13th-ranked doubles team, 9-7, at No. 1.

Salisbury's lead grew to 4-0 because McIntyre had to default at No. 2 singles thanks to an injury during doubles play. The Sea Gulls clinched the win with a 6-0, 6-0, victory by Lohn against Valerio at No. 5 singles. Youlios then added a 6-1, 6-2, win over Evans at No. 3 before Lutz completed a 6-1, 6-0, win against Stevens at No. 4. Babo then blanked Benitez, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6. Weaver, the region's 10th-ranked singles player, picked up the Shorewomen's only point of the match by pulling out a 6-2, 4-6, 10-7, win over Savage, the region's 12th-ranked singles player. 

The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Haverford.
