Weaver Wins in Singles & Doubles
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Visiting Gettysburg College topped hosted Washington College, 7-2, in a Centennial Conference women's tennis match today at Schottland Tennis Center. The Bullets improved to 8-7 overall and 2-5 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen slid to 3-12 and 0-9 with the loss.
The Bullets captured the bottom two doubles spots as Laura Gradiska and Lindsay Morris beat senior Amy Stevens (Street, Md./North Harford) and junior Emily Evans (West Chester, Pa./Henderson), 8-1, at No. 2, and Holly Johnson and Maggie McLaughlin topped sophomore Monica Benitez (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) and freshman Tricia Valerio (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South), 8-0, at No. 3. The Shorewomen won at No. 1 as sophomore April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and sophomore Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom), the Atlantic South region's 13th-ranked doubles team, bested Anastasia Mogilevski and Isabelle Rodriguez, 8-2.
Washington won at the top singles spot, but the Bullets won at the other five. Weaver, ranked 10th in the region in singles, defeated Mogilveski, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1. McIntyre won her first set against Gradiska, 6-0, at No. 2 before losing the second, 6-1, and then being forced to retire. Rodgriguez was a 6-1, 6-0, winner over Evans at No. 3, while Morris downed Stevens, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4. McLaughlin added a 6-1, 6-2, win over Valerio at No. 5 and Gillian Minnerly defeated Benitez, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6.
The Shorewomen close out their season Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at McDaniel.
