Box Score Vincent Tallies Four Scores For Washington
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Christy Bishop's fifth goal of the game with 3:14 to go in the game proved to be the game-winning goal to give visiting St. Mary's (Md.) a 10-9 victory over host #17 Washington College on Saturday afternoon at Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium in a non-conference women's lacrosse game. The Seahawks improve to 2-0 with the win, while the Shorewomen slip to 0-1 with the loss.
Bishop's, whose winner came just 37 seconds after sophomore attacker Katherine Vincent (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) tied the game 9-9 on a feed from sophomore midfielder Alli Dudley (New Windsor, Md./Francis Scott Key), was open at the top of the crease and was able to put the shot past Washington sophomore goalkeeper Haylee Solomon (Wantagh, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) on a feed from Tori Poffenberger in a one-on-one with Solomon. The Shorewomen's last chance to tie the game came with 2:29 on a shot by Vincent, but her shot was turned away by Seahawks' goalkeeper Kayla Dunn. The Seahawks were able to run out the clock and come away with the win.
Bishop opened the scoring 28 seconds into the game on a feed from Shelby Newman and the guests made it 2-0 just 2:06 into the contest on a Ali Moulis unassisted tally. The Shorewomen pumped in the next three goals to take a 3-2 lead with 23:00 left in the opening half on Vincent's second goal of the game. Vincent got the scoring going for the Shorewomen with 26:02 to go on a pass from senior midfielder Emily Hubley (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) and sophomore midfielder Cara Pascarella (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollows Hills East) evened the contest with 24:52 to go on a free position. The lead lasted just 1:56 as Poffenberger scored unassisted with 21:04 to go to knot it at 3-3 and Bishop cashed in on a free position goal to put the guests ahead 4-3 with 16:48 left. Dudley found sophomore defender Daniela Falcone (Potomac, Md./Connelly School of the Holy Child) to tie the score at 4-4 with 14:58 to go before Bishop scored exactly a minute later to put the Seahawks back in front 5-4. Freshman midfielder Rachael Shaw (Bechtelsville, Pa./Boyertown) evened the score at 5-5 with 12:16 remaining from Dudley. St. Mary's (Md.) scored her fourth goal of the half from Newman with 6:39 to go before the Shorewomen tied it 19 seconds later on an unassisted tally from senior attacker Catherine Stanley (Freeland, Md./Hereford).
The Shorewomen took the lead 8:04 into the second half when Hubley scored unassisted to make it 7-6 before Moulis stole a clearing attempt and scored unassisted to level the game at 7-7 with 20:11 left. Vincent scored her third goal of the day to put the Shorewomen back ahead 8-7 with 19:27 to go, but the Seahawks scored the next two to take a 9-8 lead with 10:01 left on a Erika Kopf unassisted goal. Kopf's goal came 2:51 after Abbey Harrison scored from Bishop to tie the contest at 8-8. The game would remain 9-8 until Vincent's goal with 3:51 to go.
Bishop had a game-best six points as she added a helper to go with her five scores. Poffenberger had three points on two assists and a goal, while Newman dished out a pair of assists. In goal, Kayla Dunn made 12 saves including a save on Washington senior attacker Caroline Lovett (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) with 11:42 to go when after she turned the ball over was able to get back toward the goal and lunging with her stick was able to turn away Lovett's shot at an empty net. She also led all particpants with five ground balls. Lizzie D'Agostaro won five draws and Kerri Kline plucked four draws as the Seahawks won 12 of the game's 21 draws.
Vincent had four goals and four points to lead the Shorewomen, while Dudley led all players with three assists and tied for game-high with a career-best three caused turnovers to go with a team-high three ground balls. Hubley and Shaw had one goal and one helper each as Hubley tied Suzie Jakub '09 for seventh on the all-time Shorewomen Lacrosse points list with 181. Junior attacker Carley Kendall (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) tied Dudley for contest-best in caused turnovers with three. In goal, Solomon made four saves in 44:43 of action, while sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Mullin (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) turned away four shots in 15:17 of action to set a career-high in stops.
WC outshot St. Mary's 27-20 and was 10-for-12 in clears, while the guests were 12-for-16. The Shorewomen were 2-for-5 in free position shots, while the Seahawks were 1-for-2. The hosts turned it over 10 times, while the visitors lost it 15 times.
The Shorewomen had their 20-game home non-conference winning streak come to an end with the setback. Their last non-conference home loss was on February 27, 2008 against this same St. Mary's (Md.) team by a score of 10-8.
The Shorewomen look to get back on track at home on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. versus visiting Rowan in a non-conference tilt.
