Shorewomen Sweep Doubles by a Combined Score of 24-4
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The host Washington College women's tennis team rolled to an 8-1 non-conference win over visiting Catholic University in the Shorewomen's dual-match opener. The Cardinals fell to 3-2 with the loss.
Junior April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and junior Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom), the Atlantic South region's 12th-ranked doubles team, rolled to an 8-1 win over Liz Harvey and Laura Torsiello at No. 1. Freshman Krista Filiopoulos (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and freshman Julie Lazer (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) were 8-2 winners over Emma Needham and Eliana Martinez at No. 2, while junior Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) and freshman Rachel Martinez (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) defeated Jenna Gietl and Maria Flores, 8-1, at No. 3.
In singles play, Rachel Martinez blanked Eliana Martinez, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 and Lazer rolled past Needham, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 to clinch the match for the Shorewomen. McIntyre added a 6-2, 6-1, victory over Torsiello at No. 2 before Weaver, ranked 20th in the region ins singles, had to retire in third set against Harvey at No. 1. Weaver had won the first set, 6-0, but was trailing in the second, 4-1. Filiopoulos swept Flores at No. 6, 6-1, 6-0, and Kang defeated Gietl, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 5 to round out the match.
The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday, March 11th, with a 9:00 a.m. non-conference match against Daemen in Tampa, Fla.
