Shorewomen Improve to 8-0 on the Season
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Host Washington College improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in Centennial Conference play with a 7-2 Centennial Conference women's tennis win over visiting Swarthmore, the 13th-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The Garnet fell to 5-4 and 1-2 with the loss.
The Shorewomen's first point came at No. 2 doubles as freshmen Krista Filiopoulos (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Julie Lazer (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) defeated Anna Sheibmeir and Jackie Lane, 8-3, to improve to 8-0 on the spring. Junior Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) and freshman Rachel Martinez (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) followed with an 8-3 win of their own at No. 3, defeating Rachel Bronkema and Ashley Gao. The Garnet picked up their first point of the match at No. 1 as Maria Cuervo and Alli Wong downed juniors Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg), 9-7, at No. 1.
The Shorewomen won the first three singles matches to finish to clinch the match. Martinez beat Lane, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4, Kang downed Sophia Schuster, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 6, and Lazer bested Ashley Gao, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 to secure the win. Wong then picked up a point for Swarthmore with a 6-2, 6-0, win against McIntyre at No. 2 before Filiopoulos completed a 6-1, 6-1, win for the Shorewomen against Bronkema at No. 5. Weaver finished off the match by falling for a 2-6, 6-2, 10-6, win at No. 1.
The Shorewomen return to action Friday with a 4:00 p.m. non-conference home match against St. Mary's.
