Martinez, Kang Win in Singles
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Visiting Johns Hopkins University, ranked sixth in all of Division III and third in the Atlantic South region, improved to 9-3 overall and 5-0 in Centennial Conference play with a 7-2 win over host Washington College, the region's 10th-ranked team, in women's tennis action today at Schottland Tennis Center. The Shorewomen fell to 9-2 and 4-1 with the loss.
The Blue Jays took a 2-0 lead by winning at the bottom two spots in doubles. Olivia Kasten and Caroline Greydak defeated freshmen Krista Filiopoulos (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Julie Lazer (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School), 8-1, at No. 2, while Sunaina Vohra and Anna Kankanala topped junior Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) and freshman Rachel Martinez (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula), 8-4, at No. 3. Hopkins completed the double sweep with a 9-7 come-from-behind win by Shannon Herndon and Megumi Chen over juniors Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) at No. 1.
Kankanala won the first singles match to finish, defeating Filiopoulos, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5. The Blue Jays clinched the match courtesy of Herndon's 7-6, 6-2, win against McIntyre at No. 2. Hopkins picked up two more points with Vohra's 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, win against Lazer at No. 3 and Chen's 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, victory over Weaver at No. 1. Washington's wins came at No. 4, where Martinez beat Greydak, 6-7, 7-5, 10-7, and at No. 6, where Kang bested Shannon Libaw, 6-7, 6-0, 6-4.
The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Haverford.
