Shorewomen Improve to 11-2 with Win
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Host Washington College, ranked 10th in the Atlantic South region, rolled past visiting Muhlenberg, the region's 18th-ranked team, 8-1, in a Centennial Conference women's tennis match this afternoon at Scotland Tennis Center. The Shorewomen ran their record to 11-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play with the win, while the Mules fell to 5-5 and 4-4 with the loss.
Junior Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) and freshman Rachel Martinez (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) put the Shorewomen up, 1-0, with an 8-1 win against Jamie Rosenblum and Molly Kowalski at No. 3 doubles. Juniors Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) quickly followed with the second Washington point, finishing an 8-1 victory against Sara Finger and Jenn Goldberg at No. 1. Freshmen Krista Filiopoulos (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Julie Lazer (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) completed the doubles sweep with a 9-8(5) win over Sharen Resnikoff and Hannah Molk at No. 2.
Lazer breezed to a 6-0, 6-0, win at No. 3 singles against Resnikoff to increase the Shorewomen's lead to 4-0. Martinez clinched the match by improving to 12-0 this spring at No. 4 singles with a 6-0, 6-1, win against Rosenbaum at No. 5. Weaver, the region's 16th-ranked singles player, then defeated Finger, 7-6(5), 2-0, retired, at No. 1 to run the score to 6-0. Kang added a 6-1, 6-1, win against Danni Yaron at No. 6, while Filiopoulos bested Molk, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5. Muhlenberg got its win in the last match to finish as Goldberg pulled out a 7-5, 6-2, 14-12, win against McIntyre at No. 2.
The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with a 12:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Gettysburg.
