Shorewomen Will Finish No Lower Than Second in Centennial Conference Regular Season
BRYN MAWR, Pa. -- The Washington College women's tennis team assured itself of finishing no lower than second in the final Centennial Conference regular-season standings with a 9-0 victory over host Bryn Mawr this afternoon. The Shorewomen, who are ranked 10th in the Atlantic South region, improved to 13-2 overall and 8-1 in conference play with the win, while the Owls fell to 1-13 and 0-7.
Juniors Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) were 8-0 winners against Melina Koukoutchos and Lizzie Siegle at No. 1 doubles, while freshmen Krista Filiopoulos (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Julie Lazer (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) posted a victory by the same shutout score over Kendall Baller and Mariam Haider at No. 2. Senior Emily Evans (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and freshman Kiran Pant (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) picked up an 8-6 win at No. 3 against Eram Haider and Tira Delate.
In singles play, Weaver, the region's 16th-ranked player, topped Kouktchos, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1, while McIntyre beat Siegle and Lazer downed Baller by identical 6-1, 6-2, scores at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Martinez improved to 14-0 at No. 4 singles this spring with her 6-0, 6-0, blanking of Delate. Filiopoulos got the better of Mariam Haider, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5, while Pant defeated Molly MacDougall, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6.
The Shorewomen return to action Thursday with their regular-season finale, a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against McDaniel.
