Daunoras Tallies Career-Best Nine Blocks and Personal-Best Eight Assisted Rejections

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Senior middle hitter Jess Daunoras (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) had career-highs of nine total blocks and eight assisted blocks as host Washington College for the second straight match rallied from a 2-1 deficit after three sets to win 3-2 (15-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-20, 15-13), this time over Catholic on Wednesday night at the Cain Athletic Center in a non-conference volleyball match.  The Shorewomen, who topped Gettysburg on Saturday in comeback fashion, improve to 11-5 overall, while the Cardinals drop to 10-9.

Washington College 3 Catholic 2 (15-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-20, 15-13)

How It Happened
-In the first set, Catholic snapped a 4-4 tie with a 6-0 to take control of the set at 10-4 on a Washington attack error.  The Cardinals would lead by as many as 11 points at 22-11 on a WC attack miscue.  An attack error by the Shorewomen ended the opening set.
-Washington never trailed in the second set en route to a seven-point victory.  The Shorewomen won six of the first seven points to lead 6-1 on an assisted block by Daunoras and sophomore Taylor Horan.  Catholic would trim the lead to three points on four occasions, the last at 16-13 on a Kathryn Harrington kill, before WC ended the set on a 9-5 run.  An attack miscue by the Cardinals ended the second set.
-Catholic raced out to an 18-7 in the third set on a WC attack error.  The Cardinals, who never trailed in the set, ended the set on a kill by Mary Paige Nesfeder.
-Daunoras capped an 8-2 opening run to start the fourth set as the Shorewomen never trailed.  The Cardinals would get it within three at 13-10 on a Tara Rempel block, but could get no closer.  A kill by senior Kristin Lee concluded the fourth set and sent it to a winner-take-all fifth set.
-Catholic scored the first four points of the fifth set to take a 4-0 lead on a Maria Cristina Juelle kill.  Washington responded with a 10-5 run to take a 10-9 lead on a Lee kill.  With the set tied at 11-11, the Shorewomen won the next two points to take a 13-11 lead on a kill by junior Alexis Jordan.  Catholic cut the deficit to 14-13 on a Juelle kill, but Lee ended the match on her team-best 19th kill of the night to give Washington the win.

For The Shorewomen (11-5)
-Lee (team-highs of 19 kills and 18 digs), Horan (45 assists, 14 digs, career-best six blocks and team-high three aces), Kaitlyn Marino (11 kills), Audrey Utchen (17 digs), Rachel Baker (13 digs), Sarah Bentley (10 digs), Daunoras (nine blocks, eight assisted), Alaina Geissberger (seven blocks ties career-high and seven assisted blocks is a career-best), Jordan (personal-highs of five blocks and five assisted blocks).
-Washington had 16 blocks on the night and that is a season high.
-Washington hit .175 in the win.

For Catholic (10-9)
-Juelle (match-best 21 kills and 12 digs), Michelle Seals (match-topping 46 assists and 11 digs), Brynn Cooley (10 kills, 18 digs and match-high four aces), Michelle Bouchard (contest-high 27 digs), Nesfeder (15 digs), Audrey Bizak (squad-topping four blocks).
-Cardinals hit .139 in the match, but hit .419 in their third set win.

Notes
-Washington has now won three straight over Catholic.  It is the longest streak for WC in the series since winning four in a row from 1988-91.
-Daunoras now has 316 career blocks, trailing Marcie McConville '06 by just seven.
-The team has won the last two fifth sets by identical 15-13 scores against Gettysburg on Saturday and Catholic tonight.
