Seahawks Finish Strong in 14-8 Win Over #18 Shorewomen

BAYAMON, P.R. — Tori Poffenberger scored five goals and assisted on four others as St. Mary's College of Maryland ended the game on a five-goal run to pull away from 18th-ranked Washington College en route to a 14-8 non-conference women's lacrosse win today at Bayamon Soccer Complex #2 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

How It Happened
- St. Mary's jumped out to an early 4-0 lead as Poffenberger found Erika Kopf for a man-up goal 33 seconds into the game, scored an free-position goal with 28:32 left in the first, and scored off a Meg Gesner pass with 23:48 remaining. In between Poffenberger's first and second goals, Abbey Harrison found the back of the net on a free position for the Seahawks.
- The Shorewomen spent most of the rest of the half chipping away at the lead. Katherine Vincent scored off a free position with 21:51 remaining and then scored again off a pass from Autumn Spence 30 seconds later. Morgen Moran cut the lead to one with a free-position goal with 11:30 on the clock and Virginia Parker tied things up off a Madison Acra assist with 9:59 left.
- St. Mary's regained the lead with 2:07 to go before halftime when Gesner assisted on a goal by Shelby Newman.
- The Seahawks opened the second half with goals by Gesner and Gabby Beese with 29:11 and 26:24 left, both off Poffenberger assists, to open up an 8-5 lead.
- The Shorewomen scored three of the next four goals. Parker scored off a Vincent assist at 25:14, Newman scored for the Seahawks at 24:47, Moran scored off an Anna Inserra assist ay 24:34, and Carley Kendall scored on a free position at 19:23 to make the score 8-7.
- The two teams then exchanged goals as Poffenberger found Gesner with 16:33 left and Alli Dudley found Kendall at 15:41 as Washington stayed within a goal at 9-8.
- The Seahawks then went on their game-ending run as Poffenberger scored three of those final five goals. She scored with 13:13 left, on a free-position with 10:18 to go, and she scored again at 7:23. Gesner scored off a Beese assist with 9:05 left and Lacey Brown scored with 2:11 remaining to account for the other two St. Mary's goals. 

For the Shorewomen (3-2)
- Scorers: Vincent (2 goals, 1 assist), Kendall (2 goals), Moran (2 goals), Parker (2 goals), Inserra (1 assist), Spence (1 assist), Dudley (1 assist), Acra (1 assist).
- Goalies: Maddie Mullen (8 saves, 11 goals allowed, 49:42), Megan Voss (1 save, 3 goals allowed, 10:18).
- Inserra had a strong game on defense, causing four turnovers, scooping up two ground balls, and controlling four draws.
- Washington controlled 14 of the game's 23 draws.

For St. Mary's (7-0)
- Scorers: Poffenberger (5 goals, 4 assists), Gesner (3 goals, 2 assists), Newman (2 goals), Beese (1 goal, 1 assist), Harrison (1 goal), Brown (1 goal), Kopf (1 goal)
- Goalie: Kayla Dunn (10 saves, 8 goals allowed, 60:00)
- The Seahawks held a 28-24 advantage in the game, holding the Shorewomen to just nine shots against 14 turnovers in the second half.

- This was the Shorewomen's 500th all-time game as a varsity program.
