WC Rallies From Two Sets Down to Outlast SUNY Canton in Five; Swept by Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Washington College volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday in the first day of the Knights Invitational at Alumni Gym in a pair of non-conference volleyball matches.  In the team's second match, the Shorewomen rallied from two sets down to top SUNY Canton, 3-2 (24-26, 17-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-11) after falling to host Arcadia, 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-15) in the first match of the invitational.

How It Happened
- The Knights used a 6-1 run to take control of the first set that turned a 2-2 tie into an 8-3 lead on a service ace by Mackenzie Hale.  The Shorewomen would get within 13-11 on a service ace by Olivia Portera before Arcadia closed out the set on a 12-2 run, clinching it on a WC ball handling error.
- Arcadia raced out to an 8-1 lead in the second set on an assisted block by Katie Wilson and Shannon Ryan.  Washington would get it within 12-10 on a service error by Arcadia before the Knights went on a 9-4 run to take a 21-14 lead on a Lauren Enfield kill.  Ryan ended the set with a kill to give the hosts a five-point win.
- Trailing 7-6 in the third set, Arcadia won five straight points to take an 11-7 lead on a Becca Campf kill and the four points ignited a 11-2 run to give the Knights a 17-9 lead on a Kayla Resh service ace.  The Knights clinched the match on an ace by Miranda Baronett. 

For The Shorewomen (10-2)
- Taylor Horan (16 assists), Abby Smith (six kills and eight digs), Portera (career-highs of three aces and eight digs)
- The Shorewomen hit .000 in the match while picking up four aces. 

For Arcadia (9-3)
- Colleen Stengel (match-high 23 assists), Enfield (match-best 11 digs), Emily Eng (10 digs), Ryan (11 kills and three blocks to lead all players).
- The Knights hit .227 in the contest and notched 10 aces.

Washington College 3 SUNY Canton 2 (24-26, 17-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-11)

How It Happened
- Washington led 22-15 in the first set before SUNY Canton scored five straight points to cut the lead to 22-20 on an attack error by the Shorewomen.  The Shorewomen took the next two points to lead 24-20 on a Horan kill.   However, the Kangaroos bounced back to capture the set by winning the last six points.  Tatum LaFrance put Canton ahead 25-24 on a kill and Peyton Robinson clinched the set with a kill to give the Kangaroos the comeback first set win.
- Tied 7-7 in the second set, Canton went on an 8-2 run to take a 15-9 lead on an attack miscue by the Shorewomen.  Shea Norton clinched the set on a finisher to give the Kangaroos a 2-0 lead.
- Trailing 22-19 in the third set, the Kangaroos scored three straight points to tie the set at 22-22 on an ace by Robinson.  Cassie Kowalski would put WC back ahead for good in the third on a kill at 23-22 and an attack error by Canton made it 24-22 Washington.  After an attack error by the Shorewomen to cut the lead to 24-23, Horan finished the set off with a kill to give WC a two-point win.
- The Shorewomen came out flying in the fourth set scoring 12 of the set's first 16 points to lead 12-4 following a finisher by Alaina Geissberger.  With WC ahead 20-11, they withstood a 7-1 run that cut its lead to 21-18 on an attack miscue to win the set and force a fifth and decisive set.  Washington scored the final four points to win by seven with Horan notching her second straight set clinching kill.
- Leading 11-10 in the fifth set, the Shorewomen won four of the last five points to win the set and match.  Isabella Sansanelli made it 12-10 on a kill and a solo block by Geissberger clinched the win for Washington.    

For The Shorewomen (11-2)
- Horan (31 assists and 16 digs), Abby Hilty (career-best 20 digs), Smith (10 kills and 17 digs, career-highs in both and first career double-double), Kowalski (11 kills, 11 digs and three aces), Geissberger (13 kills and two blocks).
- Washington hit .062 as a team and had eight service aces.

For SUNY Canton (3-8)
- Robinson (32 assists,11 digs and three aces), Norton (12 digs and three aces), Jenna Roat (17 digs), Jordan Dormady (nine kills).
- The Kangaroos were held to a .067 hitting percentage by the WC defense, while notching 10 aces.

Notes
- The team has its best mark after 13 matches in 40 years as the 1977 team also opened 11-2.  The 1977 edition opened up 13-2.
- Washington leads the all-time series against Arcadia 6-2.  The Shorewomen won the first six meetings against the Knights (2007-11 and 2015), while the Knights have won the last two meetings (2016-17).
- This was the first-ever meeting between the Shorewomen and the Kangaroos.
