Box Score Washington D.C. – The Washington College men's soccer team defeated the Catholic Cardinals, 4-3, in a non-conference game on Tuesday evening at Carlini Field. The Shoremen improve to 8-4-0 while the hosts fall to 6-5-1. It was the second straight victory over the Cardinals for Washington College.
How It Happened
- Catholic opened a wild first half with a goal in the 7th minute. Senior midfielder Paul Egan beat Shoremen junior keeper Austin Heid with a low shot into the lower left-corner from eight yards out. The score resulted after Washington College was unable to clear a loose ball in the box, leaving Eagan with a clear shot at the target.
- The Shoremen answered right back as freshman forward Cesar Aayon-Fuentes tapped in the equalizer from point-blank range with 25:30 left in the half. Junior midfielder Ben Strine started the play as he won a ball along the left sideline following a throw-in. Strine then carried the ball into the box near the end line before delivering a pin-point cross to Aayon-Fuentes, who was waiting all alone on the far post for his first career marker.
-The hosts re-gained the lead just seconds following their own corner kick in the 29th minute after the ball bounced to freshman defender Jacob Rocha just outside of the right side of the box. Rocha spotted junior Daris Siahpoosh in the center of the box and the midfielder tapped the pass into the lower right corner of the net from five yards out.
-Senior midfielder James Strine scored a remarkable goal to even the game just before halftime with 3:18 on the clock. Following a defensive take-away, Strine received the ball at midfield, took a dribble and spotted goalie Tray Young standing 20 yards beyond his position. Strine then sent a 50-yard blast over Young's head and the ball took one hop and bounced into the center of the net for the equalizer.
- Washington College took their first lead, 3-2, with 41:15 left in regulation as senior forward Eric Gwadz (first goal of the season) beat Young with a low shot into the lower corner of the net just inside the far post. Gwadz controlled a high-lofting pass from beyond midfield by junior midfielder Harrison Malone, advanced into the left-side of the box and sent in the game-winner from eight yards out.
- The visitors got an insurance tally to make it 4-2 as Ben Strine scored his first goal of the season off an assist by junior midfielder Cole Gifford.
- Catholic closed within a goal in the 87th minute as sophomore forward Connor Bailey scored after receiving a feed from freshman midfielder Domenic Caltabiano.
