Volleyball Wins Fourth Straight; Shorewomen Defeat Goucher in Four Tough Sets on the Road

Towson, Md. – Junior outside hitter Courtney Maxwell produced a match-high 15 kills to help lead the Washington College women's volleyball team to a four-set victory (25-18, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23) against the Goucher Gophers (3-7) on Wednesday evening at Decker Sports and Recreation Complex. The Shorewomen have now won four straight matches and evened their record at 4-4.

How It Happened

First Set, WC 25 Goucher 18

-The Shorewomen went on an 8-2 run after Goucher scored the first two points of the match. 
- A solo block by senior middle Jenna Daunoras would make it 16-9 and the hosts could not recover.
- The visitors eventually closed out the first set on a kill by freshman outside hitter Lindsay Saddic, who had three put-aways in the frame. Maxwell had four kills and sophomore defensive specialist Jordan Fairchild served three aces.

 Second Set, Goucher 25 WC 23

- Washington College led 3-0, however, the hosts went on an 8-4 run to claim an 8-7 edge. 
- The Gophers widened their lead to 14-10 after a service ace.
- The Shorewomen fought back to even the set at 19 on a kill by Maxwell.
- The score was deadlocked at 23-all after a kill by Daunoras but the Gophers scored the final two points to even the match.

 Third Set, WC 25 Goucher 22
- The Shorewomen raced out to an 8-1 lead after a kill by sophomore Riley McHugh.
- Goucher answered with a 14-8 spurt to close within 16-15 following a hitting error by the visitors.
- Washington College then went on a 6-1 burst to claim a 22-16 advantage. Maxwell, sophomore outside hitter Angelina Schaber and sophomore outside hitter Sylvia Johnson all came up with crucial kills.
- The visitors eventually closed out the set on a kill by Saddic.

 Fourth Set, WC 25 Goucher 23

-The Shorewomen trailed 17-12 but rallied to close out the match.
- Fairchild came through with back-to-back aces to even the score at 21 and then Maxwell produced consecutive kills to make it 23-21. 
- McHugh eventually closed out the match with a clutch unassisted kill.

 For the Shorewomen
- Maxwell had 15 kills and nine digs.
- Saddic (10 kills) and Schaber (7 kills) combined for 17 winners.
- Fairchild recorded a career-best seven aces and added 14 digs.
- Johnson chipped in with a team-high 17 digs and Daunoras added 6 kills and a team-high four solo blocks.

 For the Gophers

- Rachel Chapman registered a team-high 10 kills.
- Nicole Kovach contributed a team-high 17 digs and Eden Adcock added eight kills.

 Up Next
- Washington College will take on Delaware Valley (1:00p) and Immaculata (3:00p) on Saturday at Immaculata.
