Shoremen Edged by Ursinus; Mandrell Wins Two Events

Collegeville, Pa. – The Washington College men's swimming team returned to action with a narrow, 140-122, defeat against the Ursinus Bears on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Gage Mandrell won two individual events and freshman Zach Affeldt captured a race and was the runner-up in two others.

Mandrell turned in the fifth-fastest time in school history in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall first in a time of 1:55.31. He also took the 200 freestyle with a solid time of 1:46.30, just outside Washington's top-ten list.

Affeldt outperformed the field in the 200 breaststroke, turning in the tenth-best time in school history with an effort of 2:13.98. He was also the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.39) and the 200 individual medley (1:59.71).

Sophomore Benjamin Wilson provided another highlight when he captured the 100 backstroke with the seventh-fastest time in school history (53.31).

Freshman Chase Hensen won the 100 breaststroke in 59.91 and sophomore Bianti Danaj reached the wall first in the 100 butterfly in 54.22.

Freshman CJ Dunker was the runner-up in the 1,000 freestyle with a solid time of 10:33.53.

The 400 medley relay team grabbed first-place with a time of 3:35.36. Wilson, Affeldt, Danaj and Mandrell bested the Bears by nearly four seconds.

Washington College will be back in action next Saturday when they host Franklin & Marshall on Senior Day. Only parents of the seniors will be permitted inside the Casey Swim Center.
