Shorewomen Drop Two Matches at Ursinus Tri-Match

Maxwell Notches a Double-Double Against Bears

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Washington College volleyball team fell in a pair of matches in a tri-match hosted by Ursinus on Saturday afternoon at Helfferich Hall.  In the first match of the day, Ursinus edged Washington, 3-2 (25-13, 25-23, 23-25, 21-25, 15-12), in a Centennial Conference volleyball match and in the second match of the afternoon, Cabrini topped WC, 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-22) in a non-conference contest.   The Shorewomen are now 9-7 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial on the season.  The Bears are 11-2 overall and 1-1 in the CC, while the Cavaliers are 8-8 on the season.    

Ursinus 3 Washington College 2 (28-30, 25-21, 25-12, 24-26, 15-6)

How It Happened
- Washington led 23-18 in the first set before Ursinus won the next five points to tie it at 23-23 on a bad set by the Shorewomen.  The set went to extras before the Shorewomen on the last two points to take it 30-28 with an attack error by the Bears ending the first.
- Courtney Maxwell gave WC a 14-10 lead in the second set before Ursinus used a 15-7 run to close the set and tie match.  Tied at 19-19, a service error put the Bears ahead for the rest of the set and a Haley Spotts kill ended the set.    
- After spotting the Shorewomen a 1-0 lead in the third set, the Bears won the next eight points to take an 8-1 lead on a Rachel Bernard service ace as Ursinus never looked back on its way to a 13-point win.  Reena Robinson concluded the third with a kill.
- Tied 24-24 in the fourth set, Allison McKechnie tallied a kill to give WC a 25-24 lead and a hitting miscue by Ursinus ended the set and the match would go to a winner-take-all fifth set.
- In the decisive fifth set, Ursinus scored the first three points and took an 8-2 lead on an assisted block by Noelle Smits and Katie Cressman.  The Shorewomen would win four of the next five points to trim the lead to 9-6 after a service error by the Bears, but the hosts finished off the fifth set with six straight points to win by nine.  Smits recorded her third straight kill to end the set and match.

For The Shorewomen (9-6, 1-1 CC)
- Maxwell (16 kills and 13 digs), Angelina Schaber (12 kills and three blocks), Allison McKechnie (21 assists and 11 digs), Jordan Fairchild (13 digs), Victoria Kile (11 digs) 
- Team hit .044 in the contest, notched five rejections and served up 13 aces.

For Ursinus (11-2, 1-1 CC)
- Cressman (12 kills), Smits (11 kills and five blocks), Spotts (11 kills), Bernard (six aces), Emma Illovsky (15 digs)
- The Bears hit .146 in the contest, had nine blocks and 14 aces.

Notes
- Maxwell chalked up her fifth double-double of the season.

Cabrini 3 Washington College 0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-22)
How It Happened
- The Cavaliers led 7-4 in the first set before winning seven of the next nine points to take a 14-6 lead on an attack miscue by the Shorewomen.  Hannah Dalton clinched the set with a kill.
- Cabrini used a 5-0 run in the second set to take a 16-8 lead following a bad set by Washington.  Victoria Camacho tallied a finisher to end the second.
- In the third set, Sam Heenan notched an ace to give the Cavaliers a 6-1 lead before the Shorewomen went on a 14-6 run to take a 15-12 advantage on McKechnie ace.  Tied at 22-22, Cabrini won the final three points to capture the set and match.  Lilyanna Baynum ended the contest with a kill.

For The Shorewomen (9-7)
- Maxwell (six kills), Colette Franck (nine digs), McKechnie (three aces)
- Washington hit .000, notched two blocks and totaled four aces.

For Cabrini (9-8)
- Dalton (10 kills and four blocks), Melanie Cotes-Rivera (13 assists), Gina Custer (14 digs), Heenan (four aces)
- The Cavaliers hit .275 while notching eight aces and six blocks.

Notes
- The Shorewomen and Cavaliers were meeting for the first time since 2008.
