Owings Mills, Md. – Senior forward
Lauren Maynor (Ellicott City, Md., Howard) scored a break-away goal just fifteen seconds into the second half as the Washington College women's soccer team blanked Stevenson, 1-0, in the season-opener for both teams at Mustang Stadium.
The Shorewomen, who defeated the Mustangs in Chestertown (3-0) last season, did not allow a single shot in the final 45 minutes and yielded just four throughout the match.
How It Happened
-The Maroon & Black caught the hosts by surprise on the opening kick-off of the final half. After playing the opening tap back to center fullback
Rachel Chatfield (Lovettsville, Va., Woodgrove), the senior sent a 60-yard bomb down the center of the pitch. Maynor sprinted onto the ball at the 10-yard line and found herself with a one-on-one opportunity against Stevenson goalkeeper Courtney Wysokowski. The diving Wysokowski was able to get a piece of an initial hard shot by Maynor, however, the ball squirted past her and Maynor was able to knock in the loose change into the lower left corner of the goal. It was the first game-winning tally of Maynor's career.
-The game was a defensive struggle with few scoring opportunities for either squad. The Shorewomen fired 11 shots (5 on goal) while the hosts recorded four (1 on goal).
-Washington College took four corner kicks while the Mustangs attempted two.
