Shorewomen Set Rally Scoring Program Record for Aces Versus Trinity (D.C.) in Tri-Match Split

Washington Aces Trinity (D.C.) in Three After Falling to Host St. Mary’s (Md.) in Four Sets

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Washington College volleyball team went 1-1 on Saturday on Saturday on Ed Cole Court.  In the second match of the day, the Shorewomen served up a rally scoring era record 41 aces in a 3-0 (25-4, 25-3, 25-5) win over Trinity (D.C.).  In the first match of the day, St. Mary's (Md.) topped Washington, 3-1 (28-26, 25-20, 16-25, 27-25).

How It Happened
- The Seahawks won the final two points of the opening set to win by two.  Grace Gilmore notched a kill to make it 27-26 and Margaret McGlothlin recorded an assist to clinch the first. 
- In the second set, St. Mary's led 23-20 before capturing the last two points to win by five.  An attack error by the Shorewomen gave the hosts a 2-0 lead in sets.
- Washington stayed alive with a nine-point win the in third set as Sylvia Johnson (Catonsville, Md., Catonsville) clinched the set with a finisher.
- Allison McKechnie (Aliso Viejo, Calif., Jserra Catholic) gave WC a 25-24 lead and were just one point away from forcing a fifth and deciding set before the hosts rolled off three straight points to win the set and match.  Nancy Slaughter tied the set at 25-25 before an attack miscue by the Shorewomen gave the Seahawks a one-point lead.  Nicole Gibson ended the contest with a service ace.

For The Shorewomen (3-2)
- Angelina Schaber (Carlsbad, Calif., San Dieguito Academy) (career-best and match-high 18 kills), Giselle Kleinbussink (Gaithersburg, Md., Wootton) (14 kills to set personal best; two blocks), McKechnie (22 assists, 10 digs and three aces for first career double-double), Brooklynn Pugner (Berlin, Md., Stephen Decatur) (18 assists and five aces), Logan Kenny (Boiling Springs, S.C., Boiling Springs) (two blocks), Jordan Fairchild (Litchfield Park, Ariz., Agua Fria) (15 digs), Colette Franck (Kennett Square, Pa., Kennett Square) (career-best nine aces)
- Team hit .246 in the contest, notched three rejections and served up 14 aces.

For St. Mary's (Md.) (3-1)
- Meghan Stevens (team-best 12 kills and four aces), Gilmore (11 kills), Nicole Gibson (18 assists and five aces), Alayna Sievert (contest-topping 22 assists), McGlothlin (15 digs)
- The Seahawks hit .299 in the contest, had one block and 14 aces.

How It Happened
- After losing the first point to the Tigers, the Shorewomen won the next 10 points to take a 10-1 lead on a Colette Franck ace.  A service error by Trinity ended the first set.
- Gianna Romano capped an 8-0 run to give WC an 8-1 lead in the second with an ace.  Emily Walker capped the second set with an ace as the Shorewomen won the last 13 points.
- In the third set, the Shorewomen jumped out to a 7-1 advantage following a Franck ace.  Walker finished the match with an ace as WC scored the final eight points of the contest.

For The Shorewomen (4-2)
- Walker (12 aces to set record for aces in rally scoring era), Pugner (13 assists), Lindsay Saddic (Downingtown, Pa., Downingtown East) and Schaber (five aces)
- Washington had 41 aces and zero blocks as the team hit .789 on 17 kills and just two errors in 19 hitting attempts.

For Trinity (D.C.) (0-2)
- Jakiya Young (kill), Leilani Hernandez (assist)
- Tigers hit -.778 while notching zero aces and blocks.

Notes
- In their three matches this week, the Shorewomen totaled 75 aces.
- Walker's 12 aces are the most by a WC player in the rally scoring era, which dates back to 2001.  The prior high was 11 which was done three times, the last being by Jensyn Hartzell '22 on September 25, 2019 at Bryn Mawr.
- The prior high for aces in a match by Washington in the rally scoring era was 25 at Bryn Mawr on September 25, 2019.
