Washington D.C. – The visiting Washington College field hockey team dropped a 3-2 overtime heartbreaker against the Catholic Cardinals on Wednesday evening at Cardinal Stadium. Both squads now stand at 3-2 on the season.
The Shorewomen received goals from sophomore forward
Kat Esposito (Severna Park, Md., Severna Park) and senior midfielder/forward
Jillian Brejnik (Virginia Beach, Va., Frank W. Cox) (Virginia Beach, Va.) while junior goalie
Ava Rivera (Simsbury, Conn., Ethel Walker School)stopped a career-best 13 shots.
How It Happened
-Washington College got on the scoreboard first following a penalty corner at the 9:57 mark. Esposito took a feed from sophomore
Zoe Shevitz (Arnold, Md., Broadneck) and beat goalie Abigail Kearney from just inside the box.
- Catholic evened the contest just fifty-four seconds into the fourth quarter when Kellie Caputo stuffed in a rebound after an initial save by Rivera.
- The Shorewomen, however, responded just thirty-five seconds later at 59:40 as Esposito set-up Brejnik from point-blank range.
- The Cardinals forced overtime as they managed to knot the score at 2-2 with just twenty seconds remaining in regulation. The hosts converted a penalty corner as Ashley Martin snuck one past Rivera after receiving a pass from Niki Micciche.
- Catholic scored the game-winner with 4:27 left in overtime when Liv Canterino put in a helper from Mary Parker.
