St. Mary's (Md.) Scores Three Unanswered Goals to Hand Field Hockey a 4-1 Defeat

Esposito Garners Team-Leading Fourth Goal

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The visiting St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks scored three unanswered goals en route to a 4-1 victory over the Washington College field hockey squad, in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shorewomen fall to 3-3 while the Seahawks improve to 4-1.

Sophomore forward Kat Esposito (Severna Park, Md., Severna Park) scored the lone goal for the hosts while junior goalkeeper Ava Rivera (Simsbury, Conn., Ethel Walker School) made four saves.

How It Happened
- The Seahawks struck first just 2:10 into the opening quarter as senior forward Celina Kaufman stuffed in a feed from freshman Brenna Ziegler for the first of her three goals. Rivera stopped the initial shot by Ziegler, however, she was able to corral the rebound and thread a pass to Kaufman who was all alone in front of the cage.
- Washington College evened the contest just over seven minutes into the second quarter following a well-executed penalty corner. Freshman Emma Campbell (Baltimore, Md., Bryn Mawr) put the corner into play and then received a feed right back just in front of the cage. The forward then found a wide-open Esposito in front of the goal, who scored from six yards out.
- The visitors went ahead for good with just fifty-one seconds remaining in the opening half. Ziegler made a run from the left wing into the middle of the circle and beat Rivera with a shot into the left side of the net from 15 yards out.
- St. Mary's (Md.) extended their lead to 3-1 at the 46:16 mark when Kaufman gathered a loose ball, spun and beat Rivera with a shot into the right side of the cage.
-The Seahawks put the game out of reach with just under ten minutes left as Kaufman secured her final goal on a penalty stroke tally.
