Shorewomen Win Two at Tri-Match

Washington Edges Host Notre Dame (Md.) in Five Sets and Tops Gwynedd Mercy in Four

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Washington College volleyball team went 2-0 on Saturday on Saturday at the Marion Burt Knotts Sports Complex.  The Shorewomen edged host Notre Dame (Md.), 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 25-15, 15-25, 15-12), in the first match of the day before topping Gwynedd Mercy, 3-1 (25-27, 25-22, 25-21, 25-11) In the second match.

How It Happened
- Tied 19-19 in the first set, Washington won six of the final eight points to take the set by four.  A service error by Notre Dame ended the first. 
- In the second set, the Gators overcame a 9-2 deficit to outscore the Shorewomen 23-9 the rest of the second to even the match.  Ciarra Bockstie put the hosts ahead 17-16 on a kill and a Rosemary O'Brien finisher finisher ended the second.
 - The Shorewomen coasted to a 10-point win in the third set with Logan Kenny (Boiling Springs, S.C., Boiling Springs) netting an ace for the 25th point.
- Emma Mueller tallied an ace to give Notre Dame a 10-point victory in the fourth set as the hosts won six of the final eight points.
- Trailing 13-9 in the fifth set, the Gators won the next three points to cut the lead to 13-12 following an attack error by the Shorewomen.  However WC would answer with the next two points to win the set and match.  A service error by the hosts gave WC a 14-12 lead and Angelina Schaber (Carlsbad, Calif., San Dieguito Academy) netted her 20th kill of the contest to win it.

For The Shorewomen (5-3)
- Schaber (career-best and match-high 20 kills), Courtney Maxwell (Middletown, Del., Caravel Academy) (14 kills and 21 digs), Allison McKechnie (Aliso Viejo, Calif., Jserra Catholic) (25 assists and 20 digs), Brooklynn Pugner (Berlin, Md., Stephen Decatur) (16 assists and 16 aces), Kenny (three blocks), Jordan Fairchild (Litchfield Park, Ariz., Agua Fria) (26 digs and four aces), Victoria Kile (Atlanta, Ga., Dunwoody) (15 digs)
- Team hit .092 in the contest, notched six rejections and served up eight aces.

For Notre Dame (Md.) (2-5)
- O'Brien (12 kills), Mueller (21 assists, 10 digs and three aces), Natalie Newton (14 assists and 10 digs), Paulina Hernandez (match-high 35 digs), Jade Stewart (15 digs), Candace Forgach-Aguilar (14 digs), Gabbi Taganas (five blocks), Bockstie (four rejections)
- The Gators hit .099 in the contest, had nine blocks and 10 aces.

Notes
- Fairchild, Kile, Maxwell, McKechnie and Pugner all recorded personal-bests in digs.
- Schaber was the first Washington player with 20 or more kills in a match since Kaitlyn Marino '19 had 24 against Shenandoah on September 9, 2017.

Washington College 3 Gwynedd Mercy 1 (25-27, 25-22, 25-21, 25-11)
How It Happened
- The Griffins captured the opening set by winning the final two points.  Ayanna Gaston gave Gwynedd Mercy a 26-25 lead on a kill and Gaston and Lexi Lane teamed up for a block to clinch the first set.
- Leading 23-22, Giselle Kleinbussink (Gaithersburg, Md., Wootton) won the last two sets for the Shorewomen on a pair of kills.
- In the third set, two teams were tied 15-15 before Washington took control of the third with four straight points to go ahead 19-15 on a tandem block by Kleinbussink and Kenny.  Lindsay Saddic (Downingtown, Pa., Downingtown East) ended the third with a kill.
- The Shorewomen jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the fourth set on a Kenny kill.  Leading 19-11, WC won the final six points of the match with Fairchild ending the contest with an ace.

For The Shorewomen (6-3)
- Kleinbussink (16 kills), Schaber (14 kills), Maxwell (14 kills and 20 digs), Fairchild (10 assists, 17 digs and six digs), Pugner (15 assists and 11 digs), McKechnie (23 assists and 25 digs), Kenny (six blocks)
- Washington hit .197, notched eight blocks and totaled 14 aces.

For Gwynedd Mercy (3-5)
- Julia Rabe (11 kills), Amanda Lopez (32 assists, 12 digs and two aces), Ashley Morris (32 digs), Gaston (19 digs and two aces), Charlotte Pugh (21 digs), Ashley Brown (three blocks)
- The Griffins hit .133 while notching five aces and five blocks.

Notes
- Fairchild netted her first career double-double in the win.
