Volleyball Notches First Ever Road Win Against Gallaudet; Sweep Bison in Three Close Sets

Shorewomen Defeated By Lebanon Valley In Straight Sets in the Nightcap

Washington D.C. – The visiting Washington College volleyball team snapped an 18-game losing streak against host Gallaudet, sweeping the Bison in three straight sets (26-24, 25-22, 26-24) in the opening round of the 15th Annual Worthington Classic on Friday afternoon. The Shorewomen improve to 7-3 while the Bison fall to 6-8. 
 
Junior outside hitter Angelina Schaber (Carlsbad, Calif., San Dieguito Academy) recorded a team-best ten kills while senior outside hitter Courtney Maxwell (Middletown, Del., Caravel Academy)contributed nine kills and four service aces.

The Shorewomen (7-4) were defeated by Lebanon Valley (7-3) in straight sets, 19-25, 13-25, 14-25, in the nightcap. Maxwell and freshman outside hitter Giselle Kleinbussink (Gaithersburg, Md., Wootton) produced six kills each. Junior libero Jordan Fairchild (Litchfield Park, Ariz., Agua Fria) came up with a team-high 13 digs.

How it Happened

-The Shorewomen trailed 14-8 in the opening set but rattled off ten straight points to move ahead, all with freshman setter Allison McKechnie (Aliso Viejo, Calif., Jserra Catholic) putting the ball in play.
-The hosts managed to even the score at 24-24, however, Kleinbussink came up with a kill and the Bison committed an attack error to spot Washington College a 1-0 advantage in the match.
- The Maroon and Black raced out to a 10-3 advantage in the second set but the hosts eventually knotted the score at 13-all after answering with a 10-3 spurt of their own. 
- Galluadet continued to make it tough on the Shorewomen as they grabbed an 18-15 lead, forcing Washington to take a timeout.
-The Shorewomen responded with a 6-2 run to grab a 21-20 lead as Schaber recorded two key kills during the stretch.
- The score was deadlocked for the final time at 22 apiece but Maxwell came up with a clutch kill, junior middle hitter Riley McHugh (Burlington, Mass., Austin Preparatory School) followed with ferocious block, and the hosts committed an attack error to close out the set.
- Washington opened up a 15-10 lead in the third and final set but the Bison answered with a 11-2 spurt to grab a 21-17 edge. The Shorewomen still trailed 24-22 but the visitors held steady and shocked Gallaudet by scoring the final four points to close out the match. Maxwell produced two kills and freshman libero Gianna Romano (Dover, Del., Smyrna) recorded a pair of service aces during the final push.
 
For the Shorewomen
-Schaber hit a team-best .389 (10 kills, 3 errors, 18 attempts) and Maxwell finished with a team-high 14 points.
- McHugh contributed a season-high six blocks (two solo, 4 assisted) while McKechnie distributed a match-high 16 assists.
- Washington College hit .118 (32 kills, 22 errors, 85 attempts) and recorded 11 service aces.
 
For the Bison
-Emily Wright recorded a match-high 14 kills and hit .346.
-Emma Giuntoli registered a match-high five aces.
- Galluadet hit .065 (26 kills, 21 errors, 77 attempts)
 
Notes
-The Shorewomen have won three straight matches.
-Washington College defeated the Bison on their home floor for the first time ever.

Lebanon Valley 3 Washington College 0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-14)

How It Happened
- Leading 20-16 in the opening set, the Dutchmen scored five of the final eight points to win the set with Margaret Cole netting the set clinching kill.
- Lebanon Valley closed out the second set on an 8-1 run for the 12-point win with Taylor McInerney notching an ace to end it.
- Chelsea Elliott (Baltimore, Md., Maryvale Prep) gave WC a 10-9 lead in the third set before Lebanon Valley went on a 7-1 run to take control of the set that was capped by an Ali Whitworth ace and gave the Dutchmen a 16-11 advantage. Cole concluded the match with a block.

For The Shorewomen
- Maxwell and Kleinbussink led the team with six kills.
- McKechnie handed out 15 assists, while Fairchild notched 13 digs.
- Washington College hit .070 (24 kills, 18 errors, 86 attempts)

For Lebanon Valley
- McInerney led all players with 19 kills.
- Cole had a match-high four blocks, Madison Kreider led all participants with four aces and Whitworth had 35 assists for tops in the match.
- Lebanon Valley hit .284 (40 kills, 13 errors, 95 attempts)

Notes
- The two teams were meeting for the first time since a five-set Shorewomen victory in 2013.
