CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Washington College Shoremen and Muhlenberg Mules played to a 1-1 draw, in a Centennial Conference men's soccer contest on Saturday afternoon at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
The Shoremen are now 1-3-3 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference while the visitors now stand at 3-3-2 (1-0-1 Centennial).
Senior midfielder
Cole Gifford (Delran, N.J., Delran) recorded his first goal of the season and junior goalkeeper
Anthony Pinto (Matawan, N.J., Christian Brothers Academy) made several spectacular saves, including a penalty kick stop early in the second half.
How It Happened
-Senior midfielder
Ben Strine (Hockessin, Del., Salesianum School) had the first opportunity of the game as he forced Mules' freshman goalkeeper Ben Mulford into making a diving save just 15 seconds into the match with a well-struck laser towards the far post.
- Strine had another solid opportunity in the 22' but just missed the target when his 25-yard blast sailed wide left of the net.
- Pinto made a diving save to his left on a ball that was ticketed for the lower right corner of the net in the 34' off a shot by senior forward Tarin Morris.
- Pinto then thwarted the visitors again after leaving his line to make a sliding stop on sophomore midfielder Jason Edelstein just a minute later.
- Pinto played hero yet again as he stopped a penalty kick ten minutes into the second half after a Mule was taken down in the box. Senior midfielder Chris Richards aimed for the lower right corner but Pinto guessed correctly and made another diving save.
-The Shoremen finally broke through in the 58' on a hustle goal by Gifford just seconds after a free kick by senior midfielder
Harrison Malone (Media, Pa., Episcopal Academy). Following a set-piece service, Strine struck the bottom of the left post from five yards out and the ball caromed in front to a charging Gifford. Gifford then put the rebound on target and Mulford made an initial stop to his left, however, the ball bounced off his hand and trickled along the goal line. Gifford was able to follow it up and stuff it in with Mulford out of position.
-The visitors evened the contest with just 9:24 remaining when Trevor Mikuta put in a deflection from seven yards out after a blocked shot following a corner kick.
