Shorewomen Notch First Two Wins of 2022

Team Tops Both Wilson and Immaculata in Three Sets

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Washington College volleyball team won its first two matches of the season with a pair of home wins on Saturday afternoon at Penny J. Fall Gymnasium in non-conference volleyball action.  In the first match of the day, Washington swept visiting Wilson, 3-0 (25-7, 25-3, 25-9) and in the last match of the tri-match, topped visiting Immaculata, 3-0 (25-8, 25-18, 25-19).  The Shorewomen are now 2-1 on the season.

How It Happened
- In the first set, WC won the first six points to take control of the set on its way to a win over Wilson.  A service ace by Allison McKechnie (Aliso Viejo, Calif., Jserra Catholic) ended the first. 
- The Shorewomen took control of the second set with seven straight points before the Phoenix won a point.  Logan Kenny (Boiling Springs, S.C., Boiling Springs) finished the middle set of the match with a finisher.
- Leading 4-3 in the third and final set, Washington scored the next nine points to take a 13-3 lead on an attack error by Wilson.  A hitting miscue by the Phoenix ended the set and contest.

For The Shorewomen (1-1)
- Sylvia Johnson (Catonsville, Md., Catonsville) (11 kills and hit .912), Brooklynn Pugner (Berlin, Md., Stephen Decatur) (23 assists), Jordan Fairchild (Litchfield Park, Ariz., Agua Fria) (seven aces), Kenny (four blocks)
- Team hit .534 in the contest, notched five rejections and served up 19 aces.

For Wilson (0-2)
- Deah Menedis (four kills and four digs), Alyson Garcelon (four assists)
- The Phoenix hit -.163 in the contest, had zero blocks and two aces.

Washington College 3 Immaculata 0 (25-8, 25-18, 25-19)

How It Happened
- The Shorewomen won the opening five points of the set and never trailed on their way to the first set win.  Courtney Maxwell (Middletown, Del., Caravel Academy) ended the first with an ace.
- Washington and Immaculata were tied 7-7 in the second before WC netted four straight points to take an 11-7 lead on a block by Kenny.  An attack error by the Mighty Macs put the Shorewomen ahead for good at 8-7.
- The visitors jumped out to an 8-2 lead following an Isabelle Davis kill in the third set and led 15-13 following a service error by the hosts before WC went on a set and match closing 12-4 run to end the contest.  An attack error by the Mighty Macs put the Shorewomen ahead for the rest of the third at 16-15 and an attack error by Immaculata concluded the set and match.
 
For The Shorewomen (2-1)

- Angelina Schaber (Carlsbad, Calif., San Dieguito Academy) (13 kills), Pugner (13 assists), Fairchild (17 digs and six aces), McKechnie (22 assists), Kenny and Riley McHugh (Burlington, Mass., Austin Preparatory School) (two blocks)
- Washington had 17 aces and four blocks as the team hit .218.

For Immaculata (2-1)
- Davis (eight kills and 10 digs), Emily Etten (14 assists), Lily Burnett (13 digs), Isabella Ridgell (three aces)
- The Mighty Macs hit .053 while notching five aces and five blocks.

Notes
- Johnson was named the Goose Nation TV Shorewoman Player of the Match against Wilson and Schaber was named the Goose Nation TV Shorewoman Player of the match versus Immaculata.
- In the middle match, Immaculata swept Wilson 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-20).
