CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The host Washington College men's soccer team came up with their second straight draw to open the 2022 season after a 1-1 result against the York (Pa.) Spartans on Wednesday evening at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
The Shoremen (0-0-2) scored on a penalty kick in the 58' by senior forward
Ben Strine (Hockessin, Del., Salesianum School). York (Pa) (2-0-1) scored just thirty-nine seconds into the match for their lone marker.
How It Happened
-The Spartans took advantage of a defensive miscue to get on the board just seconds into the contest. Junior midfielder Luke Nall sent a cross from just inside the far endline into the center of the box. The ball snuck under the foot of defender
Chris Comber (Chester Springs, Pa., Downingtown East)and junior forward Jack Mitzelfelt was there to tap the bouncing ball past Shoremen keeper
Anthony Pinto (Matawan, N.J., Christian Brothers Academy), who had charged off his line.
-Washington College finally got even 13 minutes into the second half as the Maroon & Black were awarded a penalty kick. Forward
Eric Gwadz (Washington, D.C., Woodrow Wilson)was taken down in the box by Spartan keeper Brady Bixler after sophomore midfielder
Dominic Miller (Brentwood, Tenn., Ravenwood) sent a high-arching service towards the far post. Strine took the kick and ripped the equalizer into the left corner of the net.

-The hosts held an 18-5 advantage in shots and attempted eight corner kicks compared to just one by the visitors.
-Gwadz took a game-high six shots
