Men's Soccer Advances to Second Round of NCAA Tournament

Malone's goal sends Washington through to face Kenyon.

GAMBIER, Ohio - The Washington College men's soccer team began NCAA Tournament play against the Otterbein University Cardinals on the campus of Kenyon College. The Shoremen struck first in the 62nd minute through Tyler Davidson but the Cardinals answered immediately to tie the match at one. Into the final seven minutes, Ben Strine played Harrison Malone in behind the Otterbein defense. The senior collected the ball and scored to send the Shoremen through to the next round of the NCAA Tournament.

Washington 2 Otterbein 1

How it happened:

-The Shoremen spent a majority of the first half on the attack as they fired nine shots towards goal in the opening 45 minutes. The Cardinal keeper Casey Thompson registered seven saves in the first half. Otterbein mustered up four efforts towards goal and attempted four corners in the first half but nothing trouble Shoremen keeper Anthony Pinto as he was not required to make a first half save.

-Washington opened the scoring in the 62nd minute when Tyler Davidson scored from a Harrison Malone assist. Otterbein responded in only 1:08 as Gavin Miriello leveled things up at one. The Cardinals continued to attack, out-shooting the Shoremen in the second half and forcing Pinto to make three second half saves. Those efforts proved crucial as Strine sent Malone behind the Otterbein defense to give Washington the lead with just over six minutes remaining.
