Shoremen Split First Two in Bison Classic

Sofron deals in Shoremen win.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Washington College baseball team started play in the 2023 Bison Baseball Classic on the campus of Gallaudet University. The Shoremen played two contests with first against Gallaudet. The Shoremen used 21 hits to cruise past the hosts 19-5. In the second game of the day, Washington took on the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers (RIT). Both teams pitching started strong before the Tigers plated three runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings. The Shoremen continued to struggled offensively the rest of the way, dropping the contest 10-1.

GAME ONE – Washington 19 Gallaudet 5

How it Happened  
- Anthony Sofran stared the game on the mound for the Shoremen. The Shoremen offense sent him out with a lead through a Scooter SanFilippo RBI singling to plate Erik Risnychok.
-The Shoremen plated four more in the second with RBIs from Risneychok, Noah Iseman, SanFilippo and Cole McGee to take a 6-0 lead. Gallaudet plated one in the top of the third but that is all Sofran would allow. The senior struck out eight over 7.0 innings of work and took home the win. 
- The Shoremen offense continued to add with five in the fifth and seven in the seventh to cruise towards a 19-5 win. 

For the Shoremen
Batting
- Erik Risnychok finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and five runs scored. Risnychok also walked twice.  
-Scooter SanFilippo finished 2-for3 with three RBI and a pair of runs. 
-Cole McGee finished 4-for-5 with four RBI and one run. 
- Noah Lackman, Elias Philiposian and Chase Ruppel added a pair of hits. Noah Iseman, Luke Herz, Aiden Sturtevant, John Anotnio III, Nick Miller and Reese Hirsh each added a hit. Hirsh and Philiposian both knocked in two runs with Antonio III, Iseman, Herz, Lackman and Kenyon Mickie adding an RBI. 
 
 Pitching
-Anthony Sofran picked up the win yielding one run over 7.0 innings pitched. Sofran gave up four hits, walked none and hit one batter.He moves to 1-1 on the year. 

For the Bison
Hitting
-Johnathan Guerrero finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. 
Pitching
-Brandon Drolsbaugh picked up the loss, giving up 11 runs in 4.2 innings pitched. 

GAME TWO: Washington 1 RIT 10
 
How it happened
 
- Izaiah Santiago got the start for the Shoremen in game two against RIT. Both teams struggled offensively early before the Tigers plated three in the fifth and three in the sixth. 
-The Shoremen's best chance of the afternoon came with the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the sixth. SanFilippo walked, bringing in the first Washington run and cutting the lead to 6-1. That would be the only run of the inning as Liam Miller worked out of the jam for the Tigers.
-The Tigers put the game out reach with four more in the seventh on their way to a 10-1 win. 
 
For the Shoremen
Batting
-Erik Risnychok went 2-for-3. 
-Scooter SanFilippo registered a walk and RBI. 
-Chase Ruppel and Elias Philiposian each added a hit with Philiposian scoring the Shoremen run. 
 
Pitching
Izaiah Santiago took the loss, dropping to 0-2 on the season. He worked 5.1 innings surrendering eight hits, four earned runs, walked three and struck out four. 
 
For the Tigers
Batting 
-Chris Reilly went 3-for-6 with a run and RBI. 
-Kyle Poorman went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. 
 
Pitching
-John Arnold picked up the win, working 5.0 innings giving up two hits and striking out six. 
-Liam Miller pitched 4.0 innings in relief, surrendering one run on two hits and three walks. 
 
Notes: 
The win over Gallaudet is the first for Shoremen head coach Tom Fiala.
