ARLINGTON, Va. - The Washington College softball team kicked of the 2023 season with a double-header in Virginia against the Marymount University Saints. The Shorewomen dropped a tight 5-4 contest in game one after a rally in the seventh came up just short. In game two, the Shorewomen found themselves down 3-1 heading into the fifth. They responded with a four-run rally to take a 5-3. Down 6-3 in the sixth, the Saints offense found life and was able to keep extending the inning before taking an 8-6 lead into the seventh. Â
GAME ONE – Washington 4 Marymount 5
How it Happened Â
- The Shorewomen got on the board first with a run in the top of the first before Marymount got a big three-run homer from Shanyn Birch. Â
-Washington responded with a run in the third and fifth to tie the game up at three. Marymount then added a pair in the bottom of the fifth to re-take the 5-3 lead. Trefz plated one in the top of the seventh but Marymount was able to work out of the jam to take a 5-4 win.Â

- There was nothing doing in the first three frames as both starting pitchers held the bats in check. The first run of the contest came when sophomore
Lilly Cook singled in to left scoring
Gracelyn Goforth to give Washington a 1-0 lead.Â

-The Saints answered quickly with Atkins and Johnson clubbing back-to-back homers with Atkin's being a two-run shot. Down 3-1 heading into the fifth, the Shorewomen responded with a four-run rally.
Lexie Witmer drove in the first run with an RBI double.
Lexi Barnhart followed with a sac-fly before Goforth drove in one with a single. Â
Sydney Skrzypiec doubled to left to bring in the fifth run of the inning. Â

-The Shorewomen stretch the lead in the sixth as Witmer drove in Solge with another RBI double. Marymount would not go down quietly as they rallied with five in the bottom half of the sixth.Â

-It was nothing doing for the Shorewomen in the seventh as Marymount took game two 8-6 to sweep the double-header.Â
