Shorewomen Sweep Gators in Home Opening Twinbill

Washington Wins Game One, 8-0 in Five Innings, and Captures Game Two, 9-6

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Host Washington College opened its home schedule with a sweep of visiting Notre Dame (Md.) on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference softball doubleheader at Washington College Softball Field.  The Shorewomen downed the Gators in five innings, 8-0, in game one due to the eight-run rule and captured game two, 9-6.  The Shorewomen are now 2-2 on the season, while the Gators are 0-2.

Washington College 8 Notre Dame (Md.) 0 (Game 1 – 5 Innings)

How It Happened
- Washington took the lead for good in the bottom of the first inning when Jules Weglarz scored on a fielding error off the bat of Alyssa Vieira.  Vieira was credited with an RBI.
- The Shorewomen took command of the contest with a five spot in the last of the third to grab a 6-0 lead.  With one out, Hannah Solge's double down the left field line scored Lilly Cook to make it 2-0 and Solge took third on the play.  Solge would score on Vieira's single to center to make a three-run lead for the hosts.  Two batters later, Chloe Trefz singled through the right side to chase home Vieira to make it 4-0.  With two away, Gracelyn Goforth beat out an infield single to second and on the play both Lexie Witmer and Trefz scored to cap the five-run outburst.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Washington added two runs to grab an 8-0 advantage.  With one away, Vieira singled through the right side to score Solge and Vieira would come around to score on Trefz's base hit up the middle for the second run.
- Notre Dame (Md.) needed a run to keep the game alive in the top half of the fifth and the Gators got two runners on with two before WC pitcher Brynn Balliet got Miranda Burton to foul out to Cook in left field to end the opener.

For The Shorewomen (1-2)
- Hitting: Vieira (2-for-3, three RBI, two runs), Solge (2-for-3, two runs), Trefz (2-for-3, two RBI), Witmer (2-for-3, run), Goforth (two RBI)
- Pitching: Balliet (win 1-0, complete game shutout, three hits, three walks, five strikeouts)
- Washington committed one error in game one, leading to zero Notre Dame runs.
- The Shorewomen had 11 hits and drew one walk in the game, while leaving five on base.

For Notre Dame (Md.) (0-1)
- Hitting: Gena Donalds (1-for-2, walk)
- Pitching: Jessi Leatherwood (loss 0-1, 11 hits, eight runs, seven earned, one walks, five strikeouts)
- Notre Dame had two errors in the opener, leading to one unearned run.
- The Gators had three hits and drew zero walks, while stranding five on base.
Notes
- Solge was named the Goose Nation TV Shorewoman Player of the Game.

Washington College 9 Notre Dame (Md.) 6 (Game 2)

How It Happened
- In the last half of the first with nobody out, Weglarz and Solge executed a double steal with Weglarz scoring for the game's first run.
- The Gators plated four in the top of the third to grab a 4-1 lead.  With one out and the bases loaded, Emma Livingston scored on a fielder's choice to tie game.  The next hitter, Lilyian Hafner cleared the bases with a three-run double to left-center to score Donalds, Miranda Burton and Ciarra Bockstie.
- WC would respond with three runs in the last of the third to even the game at 4-4.  With nobody out, Cook and Weglarz scored on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Solge to cut the lead to 4-3.  Solge, who reached third on the error scored on a groundout by Vieira to level the score. 
- The Shorewomen would score five times in the bottom of the fourth to lead 9-4.  With nobody out, Solge doubled to right center to score both Cook and Weglarz to make it 6-4.  Two batters later, Witmer hit a two-run two-bagger to right that chased in Solge and Vieira to push the lead to four.  Trefz capped the outburst with a single up the middle to plate Alexa Draper to give the hosts a five-run cushion.
- Notre Dame got two back in the top of the fifth when Bockstie singled through the left side to score both Leatherwood and Burton with nobody out to cut the lead to 9-6. 
- However, WC pitcher Gen Kozub would not allow the Gators to get the tying run to the plate the rest of the way and the Shorewomen completed the sweep with the three-run win.

For The Shorewomen (2-2)
- Hitting: Witmer (3-for-4), Robbins (2-for-3, run), Solge (2-for-4, run), Kozub (2-for-3)
- Pitching: Kozub (win 1-1, 4 2/3 innings, two hits, two unearned runs, one walk, five strikeouts)
- The Shorewomen had 11 hits in the game, drew three walks and had a player get on by a hit by pitch as they left eight on base.
- WC had two errors in the field, leading to two unearned runs.

For Notre Dame (Md.) (0-2)
- Hitting: Bockstie (2-for-4, three RBI), Hafner (1-for-3, three RBI), Burton (two runs)
- Pitching: Bockstie (loss 0-1, three-plus innings, seven hits, seven runs, five earned, two walks, one strikeout)
- The Gators had five hits, worked out two walks and had two get on via hit by pitch as they left five on base.
- Notre Dame (Md.) committed four errors in the field, leading to three unearned runs.

Notes
- Cook was named Goose Nation TV Shorewoman Player of the Game during the broadcast.
- Today was the first ever meeting between the Gators and Shorewomen in softball.
